My aunt is 51 and still has regular cycles. TMI but she hadn't been intimate with her DH for 2 years due to marital problems. Well everything is fine now, and they were intimate. a few weeks ago for the first time in those 2 years. Now she thinks she's pregnant! No signs, no missed period (yet), but she says she just feels like she's pregnant because she had a dream that she was carrying around an infant boy.

So my question is, can a 51 year old woman get pregnant just like that? I thought after 50 women can still menstruate but don't ovulate. She shoot herself if she's pregnant. She used rhythm method to plan the "date night".

Have you ever heard of this??

Rare but possible if she has regular cycles. Change of life babies do happen.

as long as she is ovulating it is possible. If she still has her periods I dont see why she wouldn't think she would still be ovulating...

If she is still having regular cycles then she is still ovulating so that means yes she could get pregnant. I think a lot of women are in menopause at this point (or at a minimum perimenopause) but there have been stories forever about "change of life" babies so it can/does happen.

It's not totally unheard of. There's a lot of women on that list.

I don't know why you think 50 is THE magic age. Any woman having a regular cycle could conceive. A 'regular' cycle is caused by eggs not being fertilized thus causing the menses. If she didn't have eggs left, she wouldn't be 'regular'. She could easily be fertile and sperm lives for several days sometimes. You guys need the 5th grade movie and talk again. ;) I know several women who's babies were born mid to late 40's. One friend of mine had a sibling younger than his own children. His mother was suprised to be delivering a baby; she thought she was sick.

I was just watching something on TV the other day and Doctors now think that we aren't born with all the eggs we'll have over our life time that we do in fact grow new eggs over time.

I know of someone in Pa. who will be giving birth at 51 this summer. Sadly with a 32 year old felon and heroin dealer. Lucky kid.

I can happen but if she isn't even late, I wouldn't be too concerned....

Of course it's possible, but is she really basing her assumption on a dream? That could mean many things! :confused3

Yes, I guess it is possible for her to be pregnant.

God, that would be my worst nightmare....really. I just couldn't imagine having more kids at that age. :scared:

That would be my worst nightmare, but yes, it happens. My grandmother's youngest sister was only a year older than my mother, who was born when my grandmother was 32, so that would mean my great-grandmother had her last child at 51. And using the rhythm method at that age is a terribly risky idea because irregular cycles/ovulation is so common when approaching menopause.

I "knew" I was pregnant with all three of my kids because of dreams I had around the time they were conceived, so I don't think that part of it is all that crazy. Every time the dream had a different tone than my usual dreams, and even when it shouldn't have been possible (my youngest was conceived post-vasectomy) I just knew. And in a couple weeks a test confirmed that knowledge.

At my last Ob/Gyn appt, my Dr told me that women should use birth control for up to 6 months after their last period of menopause as there is the possibility of still ovulating. So, yes, it is completely possible for a 51 year old, especially one with regular periods, to get pregnant.

Dream? That sounds like a nightmare at 51. :scared1:

It's possible if she still has fairly regular periods. Although it's not likely because eggs are less likely to fertilize and implant as you get older.

I guess we will find out in about 9 months, won't we? ;)

Keep us posted!

Though it is possible to have anovulatory cycles, it's safer to assume that you're ovulating if you're having regular cycles. However, if she was using the 'rhythm method' to monitor fertility, I would hope that she would be familiar with her ovulation cues and would know for sure whether or not she was fertile at that time. If she's not familiar with her ovulation cues, then she was just guessing, not practicing a birth control method.
