My SIL has been bugging us that she wants to tag along on one of our trips to take her daughter (age 6) to disney for the 1st time. We do not want them tagging along as this is our alone family time! We enjoy our trips just the 4 of us and like the bonding experience. (our kids are 5 and 14)

However, she says that her and her husband only want to take there daughter if they can do it with another couple who has a kid about the same age so that there daughter will have someone to ride the rides with. We have tried to explain to them that it is not 6 flags and there are no kids only rides and that they would ride all of the rides with there daughter! However they don't seem to get this and say that they don't like rides that spin like the Tea Cups for example so the kids could ride those type of rides alone. I thought you had to be a certain age to ride any rides alone but am not 100% certain.

It really doesn't change my stance on this subject we like our trips just the 4 of us and also enjoyed our trips when it was just the 3 of us and we had an only child for 8 years before our son came along. I just don't understand why they can't take a trip with there own family. But they really seem dead set on having another family with them so there child will have someone to ride with and play with.

So how old do you have to be to ride alone? I am almost certain that a 5 and 6 yr. old can't ride alone! Maybe they are thinking that our 14 yr. old would ride with them? Don't know but I don't plan on spending my trip sitting on a bench watching the kids ride!

I remember seeing something that said you had to be 12 to ride without an adult. I've never seen little ones riding anything without a adult. Maybe one of the CMs on these boards could tell you for certain.

Im not sure but I have a 5 yr old and I dont want him riding alone on any ride. Those little ones need to have an adult or your teen ride with them.

I usually travel to WDW with 3 children without DH (he might come for two nights). On rides like Buzz and Dumbo (?), I would ride with DS4. DD6 and DD8 would ride together in the car in front or behind me. I'm tring to remember if there were any other rides, but really WDW is made for the whole family so must of the time we could ride together. I think your SIL doesn't understand the rides there and once she gets there she will really want to ride.

My girls were 6 and 8 last year when we went and road everything together and I always road in the seat directly behind them whenever possible.

As long as they aren't scared and they are secured in the ride I see no problem with riding alone. If you're not sure, ride it with them once and go back and let them do it alone. We did that on RNR because my 6 y/o was a little scared (for all of about 2 seconds once the ride started).

I like doing this because I can sit behind and see their reactions.

Oops! I didn't realize this. My twins were 11 last year when we let them ride the teacups alone (we were right there watching them, it is just that DH and I get sick on this ride).

I wouldn't let a 5 or 6 year old on alone though. Actually, we let our girls drive those Indy 500 cars by themselves last year too as we watched. It was a very uncrowded day at the parks (the day after Hurricane Jeanne, it felt like it was just us and a wedding party that we kept seeing going together). But there is a big difference between an 11 year old and a 6 year old. This was the first time we had let them do some rides alone, and again, there was hardly anyone in the park that day. We were just walking right up to the rides and going right on. It was quite unusual.

My girls are 11 and 6. They rode TeaCups alone together since it makes DH and I nauseated!

I'm pretty sure that the age for riding without an adult is 7. At least that was what it was for the Teacups back in 1995 when DD was that age. I remember being relieved that she was finally 7 and I wouldn't have to ride the Teacups ever again!

Most of the ride through rides you probably have to be 7...I know on Aladdin you must be 7 to sit in the front....

The age to ride without an adult is 7. Both kids need to be 7 or older. When my son turned 7 and my daughter was 6 they still got away with it on a few rides because she is tall, but there were times when a CM asked them are you both 7? They then explained that it is age 7 or with an adult, the 7 year did not count as an adult to watch his 6 year old sister.

LOL! What is it with those teacups! Kids love them, and they make grown up sick! My girls always want to go on them, and DH and I have had enough!

P.S. Glad to hear that the age is 7 to ride alone. I really don't enjoy those kiddie rides anymore.

They had a tea cups kind of ride at an amusement park near where I grew up. I loved it til I was about 10, when I got VERY VERY sick all over the place  So if my kids want to go on, they'll have to do it together LOL

I was surprised (I never noticed it before) that one of the signs going in, (or was it in the brochure?) said under 7 years old had to have a parent or guardian in Disney World (or something very similar). I was shocked. So you could just drop off a seven year old, and leave????!!?? We talked about this everytime we read it again..because we had a 10 year old withus, and we wouldn't let him go off.

This year my daughter aged 8 rode Dumbo with a little girl we met in the line, who was two, we checked with the CM who said it was fine, so I guess it depends on the ride. The otherr mom and I strapped them in and tehn waited at teh exit gate for them.

We were thinking of doing this in June!! I have a DD15 and a DS11 that like thrills. Me and DH hate trill rides!! We were going to let thim do SpaceM, ToT, RnR alone. I did even think there would be an age limit!! :confused3 We'll find out when we get there!!

Thanks so much for all the response's I got! I can totally see it with older kids especially the 11yr. old range. And I have no intention of letting my 5 year old ride with her 6 year old!

I just wish they would get over it and just take a trip with their own child! They have been talking about this for 2 years. They say "let us know when you are going next time we would love to take her but she just wouldn't have anyone to ride the rides with"!!!!!!!!!!! This gets on my nerves more then anything I can think of at the moment! Just my biggest pet peeve! And you know how there are somethings you can say to someone over and over but they just don't seem to let it soak in!! This is just not a "disney magic" type of family and I know it would be the trip for heck!! So I guess I will just plan my trip and not discuss it in front of them and then once we are back they can be mad if they want but at least they didn't ruin my trip! :confused3

You should have no problems at all. However, especially for ToT and RnR, wait in line with them at least once - the queues are great experiences all by themselves, and both have "chicken exits" where you and your hubby can sneak out to the gift shop before boarding. Just tell the CM at the loading station you aren't riding.

You really don't wanna miss out on seeing some of that stuff, even if you don't do the ride itself. You will love watching your kids speed off at 65MPH from the loading dock at RnR. :)
