So I know this is the camping as WDW board so mods feel free to move me, but I was wondering if anyone has camped at OBX, NC? If so where do you suggest?TIA

We stayed at Camp Hatteras in Rodanthe two years ago. We stayed on the "Sound" side on a water site and thought it was great. The price was about $75/night for 4 of us in August. I'm not sure if that is average for the area or not as I didn't look at any other campgrounds.

Call Ocean waves. Their the best price in the area with FHU and a pool.

We would be interested in this as well...but we are interested in tent camping.
Was the $75/per night fee for an RV or camper?
We would just like to have a few nights of tent camping in the area before my DS goes to the Pemlico Seabase with Boy Scouts.

Hi minniebeth,

Ocean Waves is about half the price of Camp Hatteras or the KOA Hatteras, but with my RV I still prefer Camp Hatteras. $75 would be the CH RV price.

If you're looking for a cheap no hookup place for tent camping for a few days, then I would suggest the 2 state parks. One is just north of the Herbert C Bonner bridge between Rt 12 and the Ocean and the other is just south of the town of Salvo between Rt 12 and Pamlico Sound.

Cape Hatteras KOA, tent site with water and electric runs about 65.00 a nite. It's on the ocean side and a short walk to the beach.

I second Ocean Waves. Less than $30 a night, I love the place. Caution though, they book fast!

Ocean Waves is in Waves, NC which is 30 miles from Frisco and Hatteras.

Thanks! DH found a place in frisco that i think he's going to pick... I told him this trip was up too him as I am way to busy and since it's for my birthday he wants to anyway. Thanks for the help!

Try Frisco Woods Campground....They have soundside campsites along with wooded sites. There is a pool but the sound (brackish water) has warmed up and the water is shallow for a few hundred yards out. Bring a clam rake. We are heading there in like 2 weeks for a few nights. I would get a site out in the open the skeeters dont like the wind as much.

I think that's where DH is going to get... we have friends that a have a 5th wheel that were thinking about going down the 4th, but everything it booked so I think they are going to go when we go. Thanks for the help everyone!!!

Has anyone ever been to the islands? What did you think?

We just came back from staying at Camp Hatteras in Rodanthe a few weeks ago. We also stayed on the sound side. We thought it was just awesome and plan to go back again next year.

I live in Raleigh NC and we're OBX veterans; a few things. If you've never been- it's different than other beach areas along the NC coast, the currents are stronger (watch your little ones) and the bugs are meaner. A friend got bitten by a snake camping last year! That being said, the fishing is great, the crowds are pretty light, the shelling is wonderful, and there are areas on the beach you can still drive and build a campfire. Try the soundside/intracoastal waterway side to watch some incredible kiteboarding. Enjoy!

Good tips! (We're in Raleigh, too.) *Love* OBX.

Also wanted to add -- if you feel like venturing, try to get to the Wright Brother's Memorial. We almost skipped it on our last trip, and I'm so glad we didn't. It really puts the effort they went through into perspective.

And have fun!
