We're looking to stay at Fort Wilderness in a tent in December. We will be driving down and were wondering if anyone had some recommendations on campgrounds to stay at in GA and NC on the way there and back? We will be coming from VA down I-95. If they had cabins even better, so we wouldn't have to worry about setting up a tent and taking it down.

It can be pretty cold in Va. and NC in December.
Are you sure you want to camp your way to FL.?

Yup the time of year is another reason to prefer a cabin.

I've looked into the KOA's and I found the Savannah GA one to have good reviews but can't seem to find a KOA in NC with one. Might just stay in a hotel since it's our last night on the road.

Thanks for the help.

Not sure where in Virginia you are heading out from, but Thanksgiving 2009 we left Virginia Beach about 7:30 in the morning towing our 5th wheel and made it to the KOA in Savannah around 4:30. Nice KOA right off the interstate. It's an easy drive from there to Fort Wilderness the next morning (about 5 hours). If you do decide to stay in a cabin, remember to pack your camping gear so as to be able to get what you need (probably pillows, sleeping bags, clothes and toiletries) out of your vehicle without having to pull everything out to find them.

Thanks so much, that's exactly the KOA we were thinking of staying at. Good to see someone else enjoyed it. We're coming from Fredericksburg it's about an hour north or Richmond.

Very familiar with Fredericksburg. We have camped at the KOA up there numerous times. If you leave early enough, you should be able to make the Savannnah KOA the same day. If you are concerned that it will be too long a day, then my next recommendation would be Florence RV Park at the TV Road and I-95 exit in Florence, SC. That would be just about the half way point for you. It used to be a KOA. We stayed there several times a number of years ago when we would go to the NASCAR race at Darlington. Haven't been there since it changed names/ownership.

There are a bunch of new campgrounds in the GA area now, which we notices while driving down 95 last month. However, December is a rough month because some places close down for the winter. We tent camped in Ft Wilderness this year and drove down from NY. We wound up using Priceline while we were driving to find an inexpensive hotel room in each direction. It wasn't that much more expensive than camping and well worth the price because it would have been a huge hassle having to unpack and repack the car.

Yeah at this point we will probably be doing the same on the return trip. Luckily the cabin in Savannah will be pretty cheap i won't mind the hotel room.
