Hello,
I was wondering if anyone could recommend a campground in the Charlotte area. We are meeting friends near the Winston-Salem area on Saturday 5/23 and thought we could make it to Charlotte our first day after leaving the Fort.

Thanks in advance for your help.:)

The only one I know of is at Carowinds. Camp Wilderness I think is the name. I haven't stayed there in years though. But I think they have redone it recently.

I just got back from the KOA in Fort Mill, SC (Charlotte). Not bad but I found it pricey at 50+ per night. It did have lots for the kids to do.

Other recommendations along your route.
Clearwater campground, orangburg,sc-2hrs from Charlotte 2 miles off I-26, this would be great for a quick overnight. Pull in, drop $20 in the box, go to sleep.

Sesquisentenial State Park, Columbia,SC.-1.5 hrs from Charlotte 2 miles off I-77, this is a nice park for an overnight. Lots of places to eat near by. Quick in and out.

Lake Wateree State Park, 1 hr from Charlotte, 8-10 miles off I-77. Really nice park with great sites, but pretty far off the interstate for a quick overnighter.

Andrew Jackson state park, Lancaster SC., I've never been but hear good things. A little far off I-77 but not too bad.

Mcdowell Nature preserve, 5 miles off I-77 in Charlotte. very nice park, could be tight if you have a big rig.

Went though there saturday and they really have it looking nice. This is the only nice campground I know of.

When we are on our way back from the Fort we stop at Concord which is the LOWES motor speedway there is a fleetwood campground there between the ZMAX dragway and the TOM Johnson Rv place. We were just there and it was $25 per night nothing fancy but there is a huge mall with bass pro, tons of stores etc. and alot of places to eat all in one general location good parking and fairly easy to get our coach in and out of places. It is a good days drive to make it there but thats where we stop when we are not driving straight through.

If I were you I'd stay away from Charlotte, unless you are a NASCAR fan. We are NASCAR fans and we count on this every year. Our daughter lives there so we don't have to camp. But for your information, from now until Monday, May 25 there's all kinds of action in Charlotte/Concord for the races. The first big race is this coming weekend and Friday night is the official kick-off week for SPEED WEEKS in Charlotte. Every campground, hotel and piece of grass that can be used for camping on anyone's lawn or parking lot is usually booked to capacity for Speed Weeks. Traffic is a nightmare. Try to find another location away from Charlotte.

We live in Statesville. It is quite a hike from Fort Wilderness to there.....Just made that ride last month......about 13 hours or so. That KOA is ok, but not great. Again....echoing others.....Race weekend is absolutely CRAZY around here. Steer clear.
Now you say your family is in Winston Salem. There is a very nice campground closer to Winston in Wilkesborro called Bandits Roost and there is a sister campground called Warrior Creek. We camp there alot. It is part of the Corp of Engineers campgrounds. Very very nice and 20 bucks a night. Very quiet. It is right off 421 which takes you into Winston Salem. But might not be in the direction you were thinking.
We have not camped the sequential campground yet....going there in a few weeks, but it looks nice and is not very expensive. Have heard good things. Would be a better choice than going into Charlotte.

Well actually we are meeting up with an old college roommate that lives in Chapel Hill. Seeing that we are going to be coming up 77, we thought Winston Salem might be a good place to meet. We are only meeting up a 1/2 day with them and then back on the road. So. . .we are looking for a place to stay in that general area and something to do a 1/2 day if anyone has some ideas.

We leave Friday at 11:00. . .I'm so excited.:woohoo:

Hi! We stayed at an awesome campground a few years ago in Salisbury, NC. Its a little bit of a drive off I77, but only 10 minutes or so. Its called Dan Nichols (or maybe Nicholas?) Park. Its a large city park that actually has a campground inside. Great place for kids, with lots of playground equipment, a little train and merry-go-round ride, paddleboats, ect. I think it was only about $20 a night. It would be an easier drive to Winston-Salem for you as well.

Shan-man......You will love Dan Nicholas park.....I forgot about that one. Actually was not thinking that direction. There is tons of stuff to do there. They have a sweet little lake there with paddle boats and if you time it right the water lily are beautful. That is another of our favorites.

You would love it here. Lots to do for all ages. Nice park. We are actually trying to plan a weekend in here too. It's only 30 mins away but it's a wekend camping with the kids! Check out this site...

The NC transportation museum is nearby too. Have a great weekend! BTW thanks for all the listings of other places I'll add them to our to see list. Oh I second the stay away from race zone. It can get pretty bad with traffic. We make it home from FW in just under 10 hours with 5 kids, so frequent stops, and we live just outside of Winston.
