i have an iPhone, but I am wondering what everyone uses to take videos and pictures on their cruises? I would like to be able to do videos through out our cruise and take tons of pictures of course. Does everyone take video cameras to use or is an iPhone a good enough option for both?

I use a point and shoot camera for pictures. I don't do videos except maybe a cabin tour on a new to me ship or category.

The newer the iPhone the better your video. I just upgraded from a 5 to a 7 and I'm much happier with the video quality

I haven't seen lots of cameras that were not part of a phone

I use my iPhone for pictures and some video but it is much easier to get better video with an actual video camera. Much easier to zoom in/out and see what you are filming. But, it's also a pain to haul around.

It really depends upon your goals and what you want. I do take my DSLR and a variety of lenses with me, but that's because I'm an amateur photographer and I tend to shoot most aspect of my everyday life (hiking trips, kids games/sports, events) so my vacation is no different.

I will say this, if you do decide to use something other than a point-and-shoot type of device (phone or otherwise) be sure you are quite familiar with its use, how to shoot the lighting conditions you are hoping for (sunsets/sunrises, fireworks etc.) BEFORE you leave for vacation. Nothing is more frustrating to the spend more time fiddling with the camera than actually taking the shots and enjoying your cruise. And uh... try not to ask other photographers on board for an in-depth lesson on how to use your camera. :sad2: Most of us are happy to answer a question or two while we're shooting but we too are on vacation. ;)

I know my iPhone if good enough for picture taking, I am just wondering if it will work well for both videos and pics or if I should have a video camera along with iPhone. I have the 7 but it's only a 32 gig phone. I plan to dump it to a computer every night to have space each day but what I don't know is if it will do for recording video and taking lots of pics all day long, like will I most likely run out of room mid day on my phone. It holds a ton of pics, but I have never really done lots of videos on it to really know how long of videos in addition to pics it will hold.

I also bring a DSLR with multiple lenses for photos. I haven't done much video aside from some clips on my iPhone. My 5yr old is obsessed with those family YouTube videos so she wants to make our own vacation video for our next trip. I want something waterproof that we can also use on our excursions. I know a lot of people love the GoPros but I am not a fan of the image stabilization quality. I was looking at the Sony FDR X3000 for our trip but we have not purchased it yet. If anybody has any opinions on that vs the GoPro I would love to hear them :) I did find this Disney Vlog on YouTube using the video camera

I took an IPhone 6 on my cruise last April. I took lots of pictures and videos. It was a 32gb phone and I didn't come close to running out of memory.

Oh this makes me feel much better!! I didn't want to spend money on a video camera if I didn't have to. If I can capture videos of things and take pics and not worry about running out of room daily in my phone I will just take my phone.

I was going to answer, but would have said exactly this. So I'll just add "seconded" to this post.

Even with the phone, there are some controls. Learn how to set the focus point, adjust exposure for spot-lighting, etc. and your pictures will be that much better.

The new GoPro 5 HERO BLACK has image stabilization so it is getting some buzz with the VLOGGING community. The jury is still out though.

Nikon DSLR and GoPro. I lock my iphone in the safe. That thing is always with me and on vacation I want to disconnect from it! Love the GoPro for snorkeling. Another poster mentioned it-practice with whatever equipment you plan on taking well beforehand. You will get better results and have more fun!

I'm about to upgrade my GoPro. :thumbsup2 I've used it for all sorts of first-person shooting situations but I'm really hoping to use it more witht he improved stabilization. Such a fun tool in my toolbox.
