I have read a few horror stories about people being ripped off in some of the camera shops in the area. I am looking to buy one this trip and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good shop that will give me a great deal :thumbsup2

Hi Tony, yeah there are some sharks out there. The key thing is to make up your mind exactly what you want, know how much it costs in the UK, and what you get for your money. That way you won't get talked into buying something which looks like a good deal but is not.

Also you need to know whether the model numbers are the same in the US, quite often they are differenet. This is quite a good web site for info, and will confirm if the model number is the same - DP Review

More reputable place to buy gear is Ritz Camera, they're a large national retailer. Here's a link to the Orlando area stores:

Ritz Camera stores

Apparently the website and shops are not always the same price, but in my experience they are always very similar.

Hope that helps.
Matt

Hi, my DH is 'into' camera's, gadgets etc.. He bought me a Nikon 7600 at £137 last year (thats 7 million pixels), which at the time sold for £299 in Argos. We haven't bought as much in recent years in the US, as we can usually source them as cheap over here! He said to look on Kelkoo, for a guide.
There are two reasons not to buy over there - a) you could get stung for tax, if they catch you going through 'green' in customs b) if anything goes wrong!
If you need any more info, just let me know!
:rolleyes2 :rolleyes2 :rolleyes2 :rolleyes2

Sorry, forgot to mention.
Why not get some prices here first, then look at 'Best Buy' on line - the US's equivelant to our Dixons etc.. That should give you a guide to selling prices over there.
We checked out prices of PSP's for DS, and we got one just as cheap here.
Good luck in whatever you decide.

You could also look at the Walmart website, they are very reasonable and have a good selection. Is it a point and shoot or an SLR camera you wish to buy?

There is a good electronics shop that sells camera equipment on the Orange Blossom trail opposite the Florida mall. My DH bought loads of cds from there i bought some canon photo paper which was less than half the price over here.

That's probably Ritz Camera. As a national chain, their prices aren't the cheapest, but you'll probably make a saving on the UK price.

If it was me, I'd have a look for the model you want on eBay, some of the Hong Kong sellers are cheap and reliable. Alternatively, the prices in the duty free shops at Gatwick and Heathrow aren't bad :)

We've bought a couple of cameras from Walmart although you can get the memory cards cheaper online over here.

If you're flexible in the camera then Walmart usually have some good reductions and if there are any problems you can return to Asda. We've always gone for cameras that take AA batteries to avoid having to mess about with the camera battery charger having a US plug.

We found the Walmart down the Osceola Parkway had the best selection (not that we tried them all) - the other Walmarts are busier and were sold out of the better deals - although if you see a camera you like Customer Services can wheck the other Walmarts for availability.

walmart is definitely the way to go. If you purchase from there and for any reason if you are not satisfied or something goes wrong you can take it back.

tartaingirl, or anyone who knows, how far is the Osceola Parkway Walmarts from Disney World? I'm v. interested in buying a new camera too (along with a few other things that Walmarts stock). Sorry OP, not trying to rob your thread!! :)

Thanks folks
the camera I'm after is the Nikon D50 with 18-55 & 55-200 mm lens the price on Ritz is $899 with two Nikkor lens and the best I have found this side of the pond on the web is £499 with two Sigma lens.
I have found a web site based in New York which has the deal at $879 but would be more expensive with the shipping.
It makes a big difference which lenses you get as this will be a big facture in the quality of the photo.
I'll have a look on the 192 but I think I will end up at Ritz as as Matt said they are a national company and have a reputation to uphold.

Coming from Disney, the Walmart on the Osceola Parkway is a few minutes drive after the junction with Orange Blossom Trail. I'm not sure how far that is in total - about 15 minutes maybe.

Tony64 - DH just bought me the Nikon D50 three weeks ago from Jessops - it is a fantastic camara :thumbsup2 He paid £394 and that was with the Nikon 18 -55mm lens. We also bought a Sigma lens 70 - 300mm for £114 and the results are fab - I found the Sigma lens better than the Nikon lens!

Check out 7 day shop for memory cards they are really cheap! Also got a spare battery of Ebay for £7 and it arrived within 4 days - pm me if you want the details!

Thanks the cheapest site i found in England had it with 2 x Sigma lenses so I may go with that one :thumbsup2

Tony64 - let us know what you decide! At least if you buy it here in the UK you can practice with it for your forthcoming trip! :teeth:

Like I said in my previous post, you've got to remember the sales tax and possibly import duty if you get caught! At that price its not worth the risk!
Happy Snapping!!

Once you've added on Florida sales tax, you're looking at about £530 for that set-up. A quick look at Warehouse Express shows it's available for £548 and Pixmania have it for £515 (although I think they are based in France).
