We are going to DL next month, and I want to replace our existing digital camera with a new one before we leave. Can anyone recommend a good one that takes crisp, clear pictures for around the $250 or under mark? Thanks!

I just got the Canon S3, and I love it. I didn't have much time to get used to it before we went, but even the Auto setting is wonderful.

I think it's a tad bit over the $250 mark, but then the prices might have come down. I got mine at the best price at the time, from Beach Camera through amazon.com (I had an amazon gift certificate balance which caused me to use BC as a merchant, rather than just order directly through BC's website).

Take a look at the photography board section of this forum there are alot of recommendations there.

But I just bought my wife the Canon S3 IS from Buydig.com for $269 the beauty of this camera is the 12x optical zoom, a 6MP camera that looks like it takes beautiful pictures. We haven't messed with it much yet. There is an S3 and S5 section in the photography board, go check out their photos.

Depends on what you are going to do with the pics. The S3IS is an excellent all around camera but not really pocketable, I think the S5IS is currently out. If you are after 4x6 and 5x7 prints most good small cameras will give you great prints. If you want quality larger prints, then you may want to look for 7, 8, or 10MP cameras.

You may want to look at a website called www.dpreview.com, they have very good reviews on cams.

What it all boils down is, what you want to do and what you like. Look at the cameras at your local outlets before buying.

Good luck,

Jack

I have a Sony Cybershot 6MP camera that I love. I bought it a litttle over a year ago, and it takes great pictures. They now have this camera in a 7.2MP. The prices have come down alot for digital cameras in the past year or so. What sold me on this camera is that it has a large view screen 2 inches, is fairly user friendly, and is small and compact. The selling feature for me is that it has a 1000 iso rating, which was high for the cameras that I looked at when I was looking to buy a camera. Even in very low light, it takes crystal clear pics. When I took pics of the kids trick or treating, I took pics where there was no ambient light, and they came out clear. Iso rating is one of many things to look at when purchasing a camera. My advice is to look around at the different makes and features of the digital cameras, and don't be afraid to ask the sales people questions.

We just got a Nikon S51c and wow, its great. 8 megapixel. It was just about $250. We got it on buy.com and it was actually $245 - just looked it up. It is a great camera. Very small, easy to slip into a pocket or anywhere. The pictures taken with the auto mode are great. We have printed many of them into 8x10 and they look wonderful. There are many options on the camera but I have not had time to play with them. We had an older Nikon Coolpix that I also loved. It was a 6 megapixel and it also took great photos. It was stolen however, so we had to get something newer and better :) It's flat, thin, light, and has a very big screen on the back so you can really see what the photos look like. It does not have a viewfinder, but I rarely use them. It has wi-fi built in, but I have not tried it yet. I think it will be great to just wifi the photos onto my computer instead of having to use the cord. The camera has a special battery, though, which I was hoping to avoid. I like having the AA batteries so you dont have to rely on charging a battery. But this battery does charge quickly. I think an hour or 90 min and its ready to go. I went and bought another battery so I can always have one ready. I bought that on ebay, with an external charger for like $20. Worth it.

I am a Canon girl myself. I own way too many cameras.

We have the Canon 35mm and Canon Digital Rebel, love the quality.

I have both the Canon S2 and S3. LOVE THIS CAMERA (well both of them!). Love that it takes video and stills at the same time.

My only "complaints" about all these cameras is the SIZE and the fact I wanted a camera I could carry in my purse or pocket and just go...

So, I got the Canon Powershot SD750. Perfect pocket camera with huge screen (3 inches). This is my new favorite toy. It's 7mp too. This camera fits in your budget as well I believe.

Good luck. Have fun shopping!

The Panasonic DMC TZ3 gets great reviews. It's a 7.2 MP with a 10x zoom. I just ordered one from Abe's Camera in Maine. $236.95 with free shipping and no tax.
