The latest issue of Runner's World (or as I like to call it - Lance Armstrong's World) has a review of cameras.

The one that they suggest to take on the run is the Olympus Stylus 790 SW. It had a lot of great features including the fact that it's water proof like as in pool water proof. Sweaty marathon hands won't hurt it. It is also drop proof from 5 feet and works in temps below freezing.

It is a 7.1 mp camera with a 3X zoom and 5X digital zoom. The runners world article quotes a $300 price tag but a quick search has it at B+H Photo for $225. Since my Canon SD whatever just broke because it was in my back pocket when I bent over (tight glutes must be ;) ) I think I will give it a try with my rebate check. Just my part to help the economy!

Scott were you able to get the Olympus Stylus 790 SW camera?
If so do you like it...could you give us your pros & cons...would you buy it again?

I just tried the link that you sent - Camera is Out of Stock.
I did register to be notified when it was back in stock.

I have this Camera...I think (It's aqua blue). Oh, wait no, I have in my purse...I have the Olympus 850. I'm not sure what the difference is? Maybe a new model? My SIL has the 790.

We had ours for Minnie. Some of the pics came our blurry...Should of had it on Sports settings instead of Auto... duh! I expected blurry pictures though when you're running so no big suprise there. The rest of our pics turned out great. All the still shots, park pics and even some of the fireworks came out descent.

Overall, I'm pleased. I've not used it too much, but am happy with it. It's small enough I carried it in my pocket at WDW. I've not tested the Waterproof or Shockproof or Sandproof part yet so I don't have comments on that...

Most of the pics in my Race Report are from that camera...

My husband has this camera, and I plan on using it for the marathon

Its not the smallest camera I have ever seen- But it is slim and compact

We like to scare people with it, I will toss it to him and he will drop it, then will wash it off in the sink- people flip over this!:goodvibes

His takes better pictures than my camera, but mine is 3 years old

We got it at Best Buy in December

THANKS everyone, I ordered Olympus Stylus 790 SW online from Best Buy yesterday - in Lime Green. I could not find it in stock anywhere else and it was on sale.

I did see other places had the 850, but I do not know the difference either.
I don't know anything about digital camera. I took this recommendation, it does sound good, and I needed one ... sooooooooo

The latest issue of Runner's World (or as I like to call it - Lance Armstrong's World)

Wow! I thought I was one of the very few who felt this way. Don't get me wrong, I admire his perseverance and accomplishments, but come on Runner's World! I have subscribed to this magazine since 1982; now I know I am assured of a six page spread with photos if Lance decides to cut his toenails. Again, not Lance's fault (well, a little his fault), but Runner's World's fault. The straw that broke the camel's back was when RW featured Lance training in Oregon for the "Rave Run" 2-page spread; he was on a speaking tour stop. I thought that the Rave Run spread was the last bastion for everyday runners like ourselves who train on, and enjoy their everyday, local running routes. Shame on you RW.

Oh, sorry, this thread was about cameras; my bad.

My Olympus 790SW arrived yesterday...
It's a cute Lime Green - charged the rechargeable battery last night.
Lots to learn but did take a few pictures. :goodvibes

DD has all ready asked to use it on their vacation for taking pictures in the pool of My Little Hagen. :thumbsup2

I purchased mine from Best Buy Online on sale & free shipping - both camera are available at Amazon.com

The Olympus 790SW is a September 27, 2007 Release
The Olympus 850SW is a February 12, 2008 Release

Sorry that I didn't get back to you on your last post. I must have missed it. No I havn't gotten either one. I did go to Best Buy and check them out but I had to do other things with my tax rebate check. Now it will be a save and buy thing. There goes fun for the next 6 months! :lmao:

I think that at this point I will get the newer one because I can drop it from higher and sweat on it deeper. Anyway, I want to hear an update when you shoot a little. How does it do on the run and in poor light conditions? Thanks

Scott

Scott,

Will let you know as soon as I am able to get some of the 'action' shots in different light conditions. :thumbsup2

There are some technical differences (that I do not understand). I am clueless on what to look for in a digital cameras or any camera for that matter! I went by the reviews. It's my present to me for the WHOLE year.

The 790SW is 7.1mp and the 850SW is 8.0mp. The 790SW has the same 5foot drop, but it seems it's underwater abilities are greater than the 850SW only 10 feet.

Darn...the 790SW I got on sale still cost more than the newer 850SW :confused3

The 850SW is lighter at 4.8 oz vs 5.5 oz for the 790SW

This is part of the description for the Olympus Stylus 790SW is the world's most durable digital camera. You can drop it from 5 feet, dunk it to 33 feet, freeze it (-10C/14F) or even try to crush it up to 220 pounds and it will still take amazing photos.

I ahve the 790SW and have had it since it first came out. It has been rated in mnay sports magazines as "the" camera to own. Love the pics and even my DH will use it on occasion. I've gone swimming wiht it many times.

Thanks, pyrxtc!

I so appreciated hearing your thoughts and opinion, 'I have the 790SW and have had it since it first came out. It has been rated in many sports magazines as "the" camera to own. Love the pics and even my DH will use it on occasion. I've gone swimming with it many times.'

I think it is an amazing camera for the price. My daughter has mine right now and I am concerned she will begin to think it belongs to her. She has all ready reserved it for their vacation the end of July. :rotfl:

I have not taken a lot of pictures, but the ones I have taken are very good. Eager to try a under water picture. ::yes::

ps...Stacie the 790SW has a fireworks setting-check your 850SW migh have one also.
