So I know that the DH is looking for a new digital camera for me for my bday (or at least he'd better be). I'm having trouble with the direction to send him in. I really like the nikon p90 although the L100 would be fine (AA bateries are detering me on that one). so what do you have that you all like. give me the good the bad and the ugly. All the pics are for scrapping what I print and don't use the boys use in their albums. We have the farm, all the family pics and the youngest plays basketball and baseball so sports pics are a must. Also low light pics for their concerts and talent shows at school.

Help me out what do I tell him. It HAS to stay under $400 and this will be the last camera purchase for a LONG LONG time.

joyah -- have you posted this question on the photography board? THere are lots of very knowledgable people there who can answer this question -- on the main board, it is a few lines above the creative community.

My husband did under my name about the p90 and we've gotten nothing..........
At this point anything anyone has to share about their digital I'm open too... Our kodak is like 8 years old and needs to be moved on (i'm giving it to the boys) I take so many pictures I really want the 35 mm quality and size (I find them easier to stabilize).
so all the scrappers out there share what you using PLEASE

Wow! I'm surprised. I've gotten lots of good camera buying advice on those boards. The camera and lenses I have came out of research based on the recommendations I got on the photography board.

I have a pentax istD -- I know nothing about photography. I do not use the manual functions. I get fabulous photos, but I am sure I'd get better ones if I took the time to learn. It does use 4 AA batteries, but I have a charger, so it is not a big deal. I have been able to get through a day at disney (350+ photos) without having to change them although I always carried back-ups.

THere is nothing about this camera that would make me not recommend it, but as I really don't know much about photography, I'm not sure that me saying I like it means much.

I have a kodak easyshare Z740 and love it... I use it for disney, sports, inside concerts (not always the best photos but some how lately even the walgreens and the good CVS I use for photos have raved about the fact they are good photo quality!)... I do want to upgrade though... maybe for Christmas so I can break it in before our Disney trip in 2010.
We shall see..

Oh and I have rechargeable batteries... I have 4 sets.. one for DD's camera, one for mine and 2 extra sets I carry with me at all times!

What type of rechargables do you both use? my easyshare eats them I have durecells and they don't last 30 mins. They best luck I've had was with the lithum batts those I can get a couple of months out of them If i'm lucky.

I've looked at the cannon power shots and everyone complains about the batt life with those. I'm just confused. I'll go look at both of those............ maybe i need someone to make up my mind for me.

I have the Sony a200 SLR. I got it for a great price last year after father's day. I believe someone received it as a graduation or father's day present and returned it. Because the box was opened, Best Buy sold it for a steep discounted price. I love it.

I too prefer the lithium battery over regular batteries. Digital cameras suck up the juice on regular batteries.

I have set of kodak and I have 2 sets of Energizer and a set of duracell. I have the same problem w/ the duracell. :( I have had the best luck with my first two..

I have a Canon Powershot S3IS and I love it. I don't find the battery life to be an issue. I always carry a spare set with me just in case, but when I'm on vacation, I charge them every night and they have never run out on me during the day if I do that.

I use the Energizer rechargeable batteries - they're not lithium, I think they're nickel. I have 3 sets that I rotate through and I have had those 3 sets since I bought the camera almost 3 years ago. Again, no problems.

The camera has lots of bells and whistles that I don't really know how to use - I treat it like a point and shoot 99% of the time, and it's super easy to use. It has settings for sports, nighttime, fireworks, etc that I have tried.

I'm still no closer to a decision and can see that a field trip in definately in order. I've got to make a decision in the next few days since saturday is my birthday. Course living in the boonies I've got only a few choices of stores walmart, best buy:sick: ( i hate that store) Ritz (if they're still open)and BJ's so I try to do as much online as I can. I really want the features of the P90 just hate the price (cheapest is 360 i've found).
I like the easyshare that is the newer verison of Nancy's too.

any one else if I'm going to spend hours in the stores(:scared1:) I might as well have lots of options to look at. Noone has the pentax modelsup here tracking through online this I find hard to believe.

I have the Nikon D40X, 10.2 MP and it came with a free zoom lens. I'm slowly but surely learning the manual features. I do love it and it takes some fabulous pictures! Have fun shopping!

I always have to touch and feel when I buy a camera. You have to know how it feels in your hands.

I feel the same way and planned (see the daily grind list) on doing that today never made it there took to long running to get pigand chicken grain and made it home with my truck in time to turn around and take the dump truck to go get the pigs. So that is moving to tomorrows list.

On the other hand I think I've narrowed it down to the p90 and the cannon power shot sx10 both have the tilting LCD screens one has a rechargable battery other has AA's so off to see IF anyone has them both in stock so that I can handle them both.

the cannon powershot sx10. Picked it up about 2 hours ago and swallowed lunch whole so I could play with it. So far I'm VERY impressed. ease of use where the controls are. Will take it this pm to the school gym for a test run in there. Oldest is helping to paint the mascot on the wall then we have a baseball game at 6:15 tonight probably a good thing I got a 4 gb card thinking I should bring the 2 gb incase I get camera happy tonight.

Thank you all for your imput, it means a lot to hear others opinions.

Congrats!
I'm awaiting my new telephoto and wide angle lens for my Z740 to come in.. I hope today... (they could have driven them here they are 20 min drive away but they only ship)...Anyway, I always carry to cards with me.. DH laughs but you never know when you might get on a roll!!!

I know the feeling had the camera only a few hours and I've already shot 150 pics and that's before the ball game

That is the best way to get to know your camera. Have fun with it, and have a great birthday!

well another 50 pictures and played with the sports mode (need to do some more playing there) and it is awesome.

Lisa CKC is actually my bday so I'm euper excited to spend the day "scrapin" even though it's just shopping. My mom is awesome and she actually decided to get the camera for us and so that is the anniversary present (june11) so now the DH needs to come up with something.

I'm looking forward to meeting up with you and Buffy and anyone else hanging around at that time.
