DH and I are going to Puerto Rico in a few weeks because he has a business trip there:cool1: I definitely want to be able to check in on our boys frequently while they are staying with the grandparents. Problem is, I can't find any information about calling from there. Will calling cards work there? Is it considered an international call? Is it expensive to call? What is the best way to do this? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

You can usually use a regular domestic phone call, but, I would check before buying it. Do you have a cell phone? Most carriers include Puerto Rico in their domestic calls. I know that Spint and Cingular include PR.

:)

Check with your cell phone provider. It may be cheaper for you to use it instead of the hotel phone.

If the place your staying has high speed internet, consider signing up for a Vonage type internet phone service. Sign up for a local number in your calling area. They usually run about $10-25 month. Just take the adapter (and a cheap phone) with you. You can then call back and forth as often as you want for a flat rate.

I don't know about PR, but when we went to Italy last year, we got an international cell phone through a company and it worked great. They charge your CC $500 while you have the phone, which is refunded once you return the phone to them, and they charge you a certain amount per minute for the calls, and it wasn't an exorbitant amount, as I recall. I think it was call Cell Phones Abroad or Cells Abroad or something like that. There are also ways to dial direct using your calling card and international exchanges etc. The phone carrier can probably help you.

The AT&T calling card (I bought them at Costco) work very well. Its was the same as the domestic calling rate in regard to how many minutes you use per minute, (if that makes sense). DH used them from Sweden one year and the card got used at a rate of 4 minutes per domestic minute. Make sure they are the AT&T. If you find another calling card that you like, call that company before you purchase them. Also, if you are calling from a hotel or a hotel pay phone, calling cards can be used. If you are calling from a ship dock or near a port, the local phone companies own all of those phones and do not accept any calling card but their own.
