Calling the phone booths in England

Do the red phone booths in England still work? When we last went about 9 years ago, I had my in-laws call one of them as we were standing by them. We told our son to answer it when it started ringing — he thought we were crazy! He was so surprised to hear his Granny & Papa calling him! Just wondering if we can still do that?? They’ll both be college students when we go this summer, but I think they’d still get a kick out of it!

That’s a good question. I think that the answer may depend on where in the U.K. you are, not just which nation but which local authority. Most have changed to open Perspex type booths ( many of the red enclosed boxes used to smell of urine) and I have read about some being adapted for use as tiny libraries/book exchanges.
I moved to London to study in my teens and (almost) every Sunday evening would queue up outside the red phone box in Leicester Square to speak to my parents, frantically pushing coins in to the ‘beep, beep, beep’. Memories.
We have a modern box in the village, I will pay it a visit to see whether it accepts incoming calls and report back.

Nope.
The red booths at Epcot's UK Pavilion no longer have a working incoming phone number.

What a bummer!! I was really looking forward to “tricking” my college kids again — even though 9 yrs ago my daughter figured out how I did it!
