Calling Florida locals; do we need to worry about 'Debby"??

The news last night said she would head to Bermuda around Monday. But based on history, only time will tell for sure where she will go. If you get the weather channel, they do tropical updates at 10 to the hour, with current stats around 1050 am and pm, and I think around 450 am and pm. Plus you can check their website for the latest (and noaa too).

With the season being as inactive as it has, the news is going to grasp on anything it can for storm news.

Just be reminded that pretty much any storm that is going to brush the state of Florida is going to have an effect on the whole state. Rain bands will come through and will kick off tornado watches and warnings.

On the news last night, our weatherman stated that since there are so few storms this year, especially compared to what was predicted, they're looking over by Africa...thats where Debby was, near Africa still. So, it may get here, but not for awhile if at all.
This time of year 99% of the storms they watch are coming off the coast of Africa. Has nothing to do with how few there have been really.

Isn't it called the Cape Verde season or something like that?

The start and end of hurricane season normally see them form in the Gulf area-Caribbean area, and the mid part off of Africa.

And we're still basically 3 weeks from "peak" season-so I think you're gonna see many coming off Africa for awhile.

I am located in the county next to the parks. When Charlie came through it blew most of the roof off my house. So this part of Fl. does get hurricane force winds.

We're not worried over here about Debby, but are watching TD #5 now, which could turn into Tropical Storm "Ernesto" - and hope that the projected path stays away from areas that would affect the shuttle launch on Sunday:

The countdown is underway for the launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis. There are no technical issues but the weather may not cooperate and launch managers are especially concerned about the tropics.

With three days to go before launch, weather officers are watching what, Thursday morning, was a strong tropical wave in the Caribbean.

If the projected path puts the storm near Florida, NASA might have to take the shuttle off the pad to protect it.

"We're going to be watching that also over the next several days to monitor it and see if it's going to be a threat to us," said NASA Weather Officer Kathy Winters.

Tonight on the news the path of TD 5 looks like it will go well south of us, but then turns in the gulf toward New Orleans? Yikes!

Our newcasters don't seem to think too much of Debbie, however there is a new disturbance that is forming and the spaghetti models have that one entering the gulf.

We're keeping an eye as this disturbance became Ernesto yesterday. Here's the projected path. http://www.wftv.com/hurricanes/9733331/detail.html of course, it's very early on, and if the winds shift, it could shift to the right or left. Our weather man, last night, said it's nothing to lose sleep over, but certainly something we will keep our eye on as it enters the gulf.

I don't think Ernesto will mess up the shuttle launch. It was scrubbed.
From NASA:

The Space Shuttle Mission Management Team decided Saturday afternoon to postpone the launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis for at least 24 hours to allow more time for teams to assess ground and flight systems following a strong lighting strike to the lighting protection system at the launch pad on Friday afternoon.
