I am considering investing in FPU. I wanted to know how it worked for you. I am a fairly serious budgeter, but some cirucmstances will be changing in my near future and I want to be in a more secure position sooner than later. I was wondering if Dave makes suggestion to actual companies to use(eg. phone companies). Thanks for opinions

I haven't read his book but have listened to his radio show for years, it's changed my life. I still have a mortgage but otherwise am debt free and financially stress free.

My dh and I read a couple of Dave's books a few years ago and like the pp said, it changed our life. We had a lot of debt at the time...two car payments totaling about 20k there, student loan debt of about 40k, a HELOC of about 10k and a credit card with about 4k. We became obsessed with paying off debt and followed Dave's plan to the "T". We paid it all off in just over 2 years. That was about 8 years ago and we've stayed debt free other than our mortgage. Unless Dave has updated his book and added actual company recs, I don't remember any being given.

Fan here too and BOY does it make a difference! Agree with pp that I haven't seen specific company recommendations though.

You can get all his information for free.
Just check the books out from the library.

I'm a FPU dropout because after 1-2 sittings where we had to watch videos - I realized I could not STAND the guy.

Clark Howard, on the other hand, rules. And he doesn't push certain companies like Dave does (but will recommend them) and he seems more genuine and nice on his podcasts - which you can download for free as well.

Love Clark Howard.

Dave Ramsey just seems to be in it for the money. I have not purchased his book, so maybe I'm incorrect in assuming his main message is simply pay off small debt first and then roll those payments into the next debt. Not sure it is worth paying for a whole program?

I haven't done DR but DH and I did Crown Financial at our church. Larry Burkett.

Anyway, we live quite differently than we used to and now only have a mortgage debt and wouldn't even have that had we taken Crown BEFORE we bought our house (would have purchased a less expensive house!)

But we are still within the right guidelines for a home (15 year loan under 25% of our income.) We weren't when we bought it though!

Did DR and it has changed our life--BUT that is because it got DH on board by going to class and SEEING what a difference the method makes. If it was just me, I would've just started the program with The Total Money Makeover. You can get it at the library and not pay any type of fee.

I actually read the book a year before the class and started the envelopes then, but started the full program when DH finally agreed to invest the time to change our finances.

You do not need to pay for the program. We were gifted Total Money Makeover and Financial Peace. Read the books and took off running. One of the best things to ever happen to us. I'm sure the library has them and it will cost you nothing.

DR's program is much more than just 'snowballing' your debt but that certainly is a part of it.

I am also a huge fan of Crown Financial. I used to listen to them on the radio. We only did DR b/c someone put his books in our hands. We have since passed his books on to other families.

Push certain companies? Can you give an example?

There is more to FPU than the debt snowball but you can get most of it for free on his show or books; though admittedly he rolled out a new version this year that I've not watched.

Dave Ramsey fan but never did FPU. Feel like I learned a lot from listening to his radio shows and getting his books from the library.

The only $ I ever spent was $25 to go hear him speak when he was doing a speaking tour many years ago--don't know if he still does it now. It was a fun evening.

I've never been through the official Financial Peace University but Dave Ramsey does have advertisers for his Radio Program. I imagine that is what people are talking about.

Well, sure, but it's very clear when it's a commercial vs. the show. Does Clark Howard's radio program not have commercials?

Love Dave Ramsey!!
You can get most of his stuff from the library altho you do get more in depth learning if you take the classes.
Clark Howard is alright. He has good advice but I feel like he is the one referring to companies more than Dave Ramsey.
And besides I can only listen to Clark for a few minutes before I feel like I'm bouncing off the wall, lol.

Thanks everyone- Totally forgot that the library had copies of DR books(and I took them out a few years ago too-:rotfl:) Clark Howard was a great suggestion too-Thank you.

As far as the companies go- I was just looking for a starting point to cut some of my expenses and Clark Howard does have many listed on his site(that's what I was looking for)

So thanks you all are helping me get on the path to getting things in line for upcoming changes!!!
