My husband and i will be eating at Cali grill the first night we get to WDW. We will have the deluxe dining plan and I want to try sushi for the first time ever, had read that this would be the place to do it. Just wondering if the dining plan lets you get sushi for and app. or will I have to pay OOP? And what would you recomend that I try for my first time, a little nervous but really want to try thing new on this trip(our first to WDW).:goodvibes thanks

I can't answer the sushi app question but I can tell you their sushi is great! For a beginner I would definately start with the California roll or Snake in the Grass. Here are some shots of our sushi dinner from this past January.

My advice would be to stop by Kimonos at the Swan or Tokyo Dining in EPCOT to try sushi. The stuff at the California Grill is good, but it is SOOOOO overpriced. You will get a lot more for your money at either of the other places, plus you won't have wasted as much if you don't like it.

I agree that you should start with a California Roll or something similar. For basic, cooked sushi we also love Shrimp Tempura rolls (fried shrimp in the middle of the rice & seaweed, sometimes with cucumber or avocado, sometimes not) and Boston rolls (shrimp, lettuce and a semi-spicy mayo). After that you can work your way up the "adventurous" ladder!

Enjoy!

I agree. I am a huge sushi fan and Kimonos at the Swan is by far the best sushi I have ever had. Unfortunately, you cannot use the DDP there. It is strickly OOP! Happy adventuring!

Mad Hattered - Where abouts in St. Louis are you from. So am I!
Sorry to hijack the thread!

Don't know if the rolls are considered an app, we pay OOP and have TIW.

Buuuuttttt the Spicy Kazan Roll is the best sushi I have ever had, it brings me back to California Grill repeatedly! DD gets the shrimp tempura roll, it is not on the menu, it is a pretty safe choice, nothing raw and it is tasty, California Roll is also a safe choice, but in my opinon not as good as the shrimp tempura.

We ate there last month on the DxDP and were able to get sushi as an app. There are 2 sushi dishes that are not allowed on the dining plan and they are larger entree-like dishes. Our waiter, Walter, pointed out what was eligible for the dining plan right away and that made it easy for us to decide what to get.

The sushi we had was EXCELLENT. Probably the best I've ever had!

We've had every roll at CG except for the Snake and hands down out favorite is the Kazan roll. I recommend you get this as your app and skip the non-suishi app's.

When I started doing sushi, my sushi loving son had me start out with cooked - california rolls, shrimp nigiri (not Sweet Shrimp tho - that's raw) stuff like that. Then he had me start out with salmon nigiri. It's the most mild of the sashimi. Then Tuna, then Yellowtail & White Tuna. Spicy Tuna rolls are good for the raw newbie too.

I completely agree that Kimonos is the place for sushi.

Oh, if you decide to try Snake in the Grass, be aware that it's eel. It's cooked, but eel is very oily & is more strongly flavored than fish. IMHO, you have to really be a seafood lover to enjoy eel. I love seafood & I love sushi, but I don't do eel at all.
