Calling all nurses! (Or nurses-to-be)

My hospital is saying nobody is required to have either of the flu shots this year. But, they are making them conditional for employment there.
I was personally opposed to receiving either one.
But I need my job, I have a mortgage.
I caved.
Got a seasonal injection, my arm was sore for about 5 days.
Got an H1N1 mist, my sinuses were stuffy for over a week.
All symptoms are gone now...except for my sense of indignation. But I'm a big girl, I'll get over that.

so they are requiring you to get it if you want to work there.
its a back door way of saying they are requiring it.
" we don't require that you get the flu shot, but its a condition of employment"
they should just say it.

Got my final exam grades back for my nursing classes today!!

90 on the Micro final for a B for the semester
87 on the health Assessment final, for an A- for the semester
and a 92 on my Fundamentals final, for either an A or an A- (depending on whether or not she will round up!)

Yay! I'm so excited this was a successful semester ... and it's finally OVER!

I have a question. I posted many moons ago that I was figuring out which route to go. I've narrowed it down to ADN at the local community college or UCONN's Mbein program which is an accelerated Masters. Our state has recently killed the LPN program and with the new rule about needing a doctorate for advance nursing, I'm wondering if this effects either of my choices. Any thoughts would be welcome.

BA in English (very hand for nursing ). Taking prereqs slowly but surely - I only have four to take. The plus to the UCONN program is I could get the prereqs done online rather than fighting for a spot at the community college. I'm wondering if CT is going to start only hiring BSNs - isn't that what MA is doing now? Trying to plan ahead.

Some of the Boston teaching hospitals are requiring that degree for new grads.

ETA I think the VA system is also.

I really haven't paid a lot of attention to that so someone else can probably answer better.

I have posted on this thread in the past (recent CNA grad 09) but after working as a CNA through an agency I realized I am just not cut out for this work and the salary is worse than I expected. Even at the hospital, as a PCA, the starting salary is $12 an hour. It would cost more for after school care than i'm getting paid. I am still glad I went to school and got my license, it was something I did for myself at a time where I was not feeling so great about myself, but realize it's just not my calling. I certainly respect all of the RN's and LPN's who I worked with those few shifts, I know their job is a true calling.

What will happen to the Master's programs now that the doctorate is required?

No idea. I'm sure they'll be a transitional thing. It'll be interesting to see the evolution of this, with the changes that are proposed to come in the health care field. I'm not sure this'll go, but we'll see!

Hey all! So this is it! My final semester of the ADN program! I've started precepting, and it's with the charge nurse on the floor I hope to work on! She's already introduced me to her boss, & her boss's boss, as well as the bariatric coordinator for the hospital (cuz I want to be a bariatric coordinator one day). The coordinator of the hospital then introduced me to the bariatric coordinator for the surgeon's office, so I've made my rounds with the staff! I figured that wouldn't have happened if my preceptor didn't like me. (maybe?!) My preceptor also said "I'll let you work independently a lot, since you seem to know what you're doing." This is coming from a nurse who is 28, but has an inner drive, work ethic, & discipline that you don't see in many people, so I took that as a compliment!

I am currently precepting a BSN senior in her leadership and management course, we may very well hire her. It is nice to get a good look at graduates and make a pretty informed decision.

Hi everyone! It's been fun reading this thread.

Like MomRN, I also graduated in May 2009 with my BSN and passed boards in June 2009. I started the job search around March 2009, and I did not get a job offer until the end of July 2009. At that point I was grateful for any nursing job I would have been offered. I work on a stroke floor. My main interest in nursing is OB/GYN/midwifery, and it was that way before I entered nursing school. Going through OB clinicals has only confirmed that passion. I do plan to pursue a career in this field one day. I also hold a BS in Psychology, which is another interest of mine. I don't have a super strong desire to do psych nursing in general, but I think I would enjoy certain aspects of psych nursing (i.e., very specific patient populations). I really do enjoy psych/mental health.

I plan to apply to grad school this summer.
