We live near several military bases and yesterday had two military helicopter flyover our house. The kids want to know what type and I haven't been able to find them yet on the web.

The most remarkable feature about them was that they had three vertical fins on their tails. No weapon pods or anything like that. They looked like troop carriers.

Any ideas?

What color were the helicopters? If they were orange and white then I would guess that they were Coast Guard HH-65 Dolphins. They're used for search and rescue. The Dophin does carry weapons, but only door mounted machine guns used during drug interdiction.

my husband used to be airborne with the army (he used to have to jump out of planes and propel out of the helicopters for heavy equipment rescue) and he says its a 2 man attack helicopter. Although he can;'t remember the name for sure he thinks its appache..

The original poster said that the most distinguishing feature of the helicopters is that it had 3 vertical tail surfaces. Mommy2three, I hate to disagree with your husband but the Apache has only one vertical tail surface and a horizontal whale tail just like the Blackhawks.
