Hello everyone!

i was just on the thread about the tackiest things ever seen at a buffet and this subject came up........

and when you read this, it is in NO WAY a judgement, a complaint, just a request or maybe an enlightenment! NO FLAMES PLEASE!

there are some disney fans who are vegetarians, including myself. a lot of times when we go to buffets- we notice (secretly) some people will use the spoon for some food that has meat in it- then use the SAME spoon for something that DOES NOT have meat (something i can eat)

i totally understand that if are not a veg- why would you even think about something like this......i dont think people look around and say-- hey who eats meat and who doesnt?

people are vegetarians for different reasons and some may not mind the "cross contamination" if it is just that they dont eat meat for health reasons, but some of use dont eat meat for ethical reasons  and do not eat anything that has touched any kind of meat product- we dont even want it on our plate.

i also read on the other thread that this could be an issue for people with food allergies.

i know sometimes it could be the buffet's fault for not supplying enough utensils, or one happens to get lost--or stolen (if you read the other thread about tackiest things seen at a buffet you will know why i said that :lmao: )

but all i am suggesting is that next time you go to a buffet, think, :scratchin hey there might me a veg (or an allergic person) behind me and they want to eat those potatoes that i am about to contaminate :sunny:

thanks everyone!

I would never use serving spoon for multiple things on the buffet!! EWWW! There are some things that I just DON'T like to eat and would feel sick if it got on my food because of the cross-contamination. But I also agree that it can affect vegetarians and people with allergies. I hope most people do not do this??? I have H&V scheduled for next trip and now I will be worried!!

As a side note, I HATE it when at Subway and they slice your sandwich in half before wrapping. They do it with the SAME knife every time. I HATE mustard and mayonnaise and if I see any remnants of that on the knife I make them wash it before cutting. I know, I have a weird problem with condiments.

Good thought, but I think it's a moot point. Same problem with people dropping food into other containers, leaving a mess and the general attitude of some buffet goers. I was a vegetarian for nearly 7 years, and am no longer. I did it for health reasons and wouldn't have made a big deal about a misplaced spoon, but that is just me.

LOL...I was the one who brought the subject up, and the first thing I thought of was the food allergy thing. Now, I am sure that if you are allergic to something, you are naturally more cautious about things, but I just wish people would think about others instead of just themselves. I am a vegetarian, and HATE when I see, say, a piece of ham in the peas at the salad bar, when every item has it's own spoon/utensil. I guess for me it's more of an annoyance. But I would be heartbroken to see a child get sick because of other people's carelessness (due to allergies and food contamination) especially at WDW...

:rotfl:

not a problem, I just use my fingers to grap a big old hunk of mashed potatoes..just kidding

not a veg. but i hate messed up food anyway which is why i normally steer clear of buffets as much as hubby will allow( even he is getting more turned off on them as we see more gross things happening). persoanlly i'd just ask for a spoon if i didn't have one for a dish but that's me and my buffet phobia talking. i worry more about the above though( and sneezing, licking, non hand washing etc etc etc) and not a flame but it seems is someone is upset over a spoon touching meat they'd be totally turned off by going through a line with meat in pans all over the place.. :confused3 ? evidently missed your comments on the other thread ( just re-read it)so is it that meat juice gets on it????

allergies i can see also but then again if i had severe, disabling food allergies I'd go where i could control it better than a buffet.... jmho

NO! I would never judge you because you dont like condiments-- i would not consider that a problem ...fear of condiments just sounds funnier than you just dont like them! hee hee :rotfl2:

HEY-- look at me! i am sure you think i am wierd because i dont want any meat products even touching my food! :lmao:

My husband is severely allergic to treenuts...we never even think of going to a buffet...

Having said that....ewww, I would hate to get other "chunkies" in the food I was about to eat..

You know this is a good point! I am glad you brought it to our attention. I can not stand for my food to touch. I only put like three diffrent items on my plate each trip to a buffet so I am sure I havent done this. But I have used the tongs for different fruits. (The watermelon tongs for the stawberrys for example.) I had never thought of someone being allergic to stawberrys or something like that. I figured fruit is fruit.
Thank you for pointing it out and making us more conscience of our etiquette at buffets.

See maggiew!!

This can turn out to be a GOOD thing!! :thumbsup2

I posted this over in the other thread, but religious dietary restrictions, too. Not everyone eats beef or ham, or wants something made with cheese or butter
to touch their chicken.

You know, this is something I had never thought about! Thanks for mentioning it. I will try to be more careful in the future. An excellent point.
