Is it safe to wear contacts longer than a month if they are monthy disposables? I know it's reccommended that you throw them away after a month, but I was wondering if that was just because companies want you to buy more or if it's really a health reason.

I'm not an eye doctor but a long time contact wearer. I notice that when I wear mine for over a month (you do take them out every night, right??) they start to feel "old" and I can't wait to put in a fresh pair. I think the monthly disposables were created so you didn't have to do the weekly enzymatic cleaning like regular soft lenses. I know that the bausch & lomb all in one cleaner boasts that you don't have to enzyme your lenses, but I've been wearing monthly disposables for a long time now and love the fresh-contacts-at-the-start-of-the-month feeling. I've worn a pair for 2 months before and my eyes just kind of start to hurt...

Mine are called Focus and where them longer than a month just because I forget to write down when I changed them. They usually start getting blurry and fuzzy after a bit so that's usually how I tell when to change them.
Not to worry.

I wonder this too. Since I have such dry eyes, I only wear my contacts for a few hours a week at the most. I hate throwing them away after a month, although I do it.

The kind of contacts I wear (progressive lenses) only come as disposables, so I can't get non-disposable lenses.

I'm pretty sure you can get away with wearing them longer than a month, especially if you don't wear them for 16+ hours a day, every day. I just had an eye appointment and my optometrist said...you wear them HOW long?? LOL I just got some Blink eyedrops to help with the dry eye syndrome of wearing contacts all day and staring at a computer... I would say throw them out after you've worn them 30 days...lol

Yes, I do take them out every night. I have new ones now, but the last pair I wore for about 3-4 months because I had to have an eye exam before I could get more and I kept forgetting to make the appointment. They never bothered my eyes at all.

I've been wearing contacts for 25 years and I wear them 16+ hours a day, every day. I guess I probably should throw them away after 30 days.

If they didn't bother you then I wouldn't worry! :thumbsup2 Especially since it was only that once. I get a little nervous when I get to the next to last pair in my contact box...that's when I know that I should go see the eye doctor...lol DH wears his for 2 weeks or so then throws them out. He does not take them out at night. Ugh, my eyes would not be able to handle that!

what about those "daily" lenses?...seems like a waste to me...

btw, I wear Proclear compatibles and they are thicker than the Acuvues I used to wear, I do sometimes feel weird about throwing them away, even though it is most definitely time. I had to switch to an astigmatism contact in my right eye and that one definitely is not flimsy...it will be hard to toss out those! lol
