We are considering a purchase, and I have a question. We could buy one large point resale at one DVC resort (say 300 pts), or two smaller contracts (say 150 each) at 2 different resorts.

As I understand it, two different homes gives us 2 different 11 month windows.

What happens when I call to made a ressie at one place, but need the full 300 points for it? (ie. I want a Grand Villa for a week). I'm in the 11 month window, but half the points have a different home. Does it matter or will I have to wait until 7 months out?

Any other advice or thoughts on this scenario?

TIA!!!!

At the 11 month window when you make a ressie, all of the points for that ressie have to come from that resort. They can be banked, current year or borrowed points, but they have to be from that resort.

As bobbiwoz says, you have to wait until the 7 month window opens to combine the points.

FWIW, keep in mind that if you buy two resale contracts, you will also pay two sets of closing costs.

For the scenario you 're talking about, you'd have to wait until the 7 month window to combine points. Ie, you have 150 points at BWV and 150 points at OKW. You need 300 points to make a GV ressie at OKW. You could either borrow OKW points to complete the reservation at the 11 month window, or you'd have to wait until the 7 month window to combine both sets of points.

If you think you might want to use just one resort "most" of the time I would suggest breaking the 300 points up into smaller contracts if you buy via Disney as it makes it easier to deal with down the road--thinking of willing my many contracts to family members which is why I did this.

you can go with a different resort each year - you bank one resort points to next year-

with the other resort you borrow next year points -

then you get 300 points each year at one of your resorts - you just have to kept up with your banking and borrowing. get one of the planning worksheets - very helpful with this type of management.

I only have 50 points at BWV and 60 points at VWL - that is what I intended to go with them..... you notice the word intended right.....
:o :earseek: :hyper:

As one poster has suggested, DVC will not let you break up the points in a contract as part of a bequest. So if you have more than one child and want to will your points, it's best to have separate contracts of approximately equal size, one to pass on to each recipient.

It is desireable to have a couple of smaller contracts rather than a single larger one if possible. And it can be good to have multiple home resorts as noted above. Multiple home resorts and/or use years increase your points accounting somewhat, some can easily handle it and others cannot. And if you are looking resale, the higher pp costs of smaller contracts and multiple closing costs must be taken into account.

We have 200 at BCV and 200 at BWV and get tremendous flexibility with the two contracts. Same use year on both the contracts so it is easy to track. I prefer the two contracts as opposed to one large. If I ever needed to raise cash or if DVC ever builds another resort where we would be interested we could always sell the BWV points and use the cash for the new resort while keeping our BCV as we absolutley love the place.

Now that we officially have two resort homes, I have a question to ask (and I hope I can make this make sense!): Are the points at each resort considered separate entities as far as banking and borrowing, or does DVC "throw them all together" at any point?

More specifically, if I make a reservation for a non-DVC Disney hotel (or cruise) with my points from VWL and need add'l points for that ressie would I borrow from the next year's VWL points, versus my current BWV allotment of points? And then my BWV points would be untouched and usable or bankable for the following year? Or would they take the points needed for my ressie from my BWV allotment?

Thanks for any help you can give me! :)

This is how I understand working with two different resorts, but same use year. For banking purposes, your total allotment (regardless of resort) is what they use in determining banking guidlines. I just added on 150 points at BWV, but it was after my 100% banking deadline. I own a total of 425 points between VWL and BWV and I was allowed to bank those 150 points, because it was less than 50% of my total points, resort doesn't matter. When making ressies you only have the 11 month window at your home resort, so for me, at 11 months I can use my 275 points at VWL only and my 150 points at BWV only. At 7 months, they basically are the same and I can sue them interchangebly. If you're making a reservation outside of the DVC resorts at 11 months, the points are the same, and you can use both contracts at that time, just like you can at the 7 month window. So, in your scenario, at 11 months to make a WDW Resort reservation, you can use your VWL and BWV points, no need to borrow. You can borrow if you wish, it truly up to you, but you wouldn't have to if you didn't want to.

Edited to add: I just realized we both have the same home resorts, aren't they both the BEST!!!

Yes, I think they're the best of both worlds -- BWV is fun and hustle-bustle, and VWL is so laid-back and relaxed! :teeth:

Now let me further confuse my issue (LOL) with this scenario: We have an August UY. Currently, we have 40 VWL points in '05 UY (borrowed a bunch for our upcoming trip this year). We will have 85 BWV '04 points, and 85 add'l in '05.

In August '05, we want to do 3 nights at AKL Concierge (147 pts) and 4 in a VWL studio (84 pts) for a total of 231 points. Then in October '06, dh and I want to do 6 nights in a BWV 1-bdrm, which will require 167 points (so I'll need to combine either '05 & '06 points or '06 & '07 points).

Next month is my 11-mo window for my '05 trip. I will have all of my '04 BWV points (85) and my leftover '05 VWL points (40) available (as well as my '05 BWV points, also 85). The '04 BWV and '05 VWL equal 125 points, leaving me 106 points short of the 231 I have to use.

I was thinking it would be best to borrow those 106 from my '06 VWL points rather than use our 85 '05 BWV points, because I want to bank my '05 BWV points and add them to the '06 BWV points for our 10/06 BWV trip. Plus, I'd end up borrowing from the '06 VWL points anyway, as I'd still be short points.

If anyone is still with me, my question is: will MS let me keep my points separate in this way?

As I'm reading this I think I need a spreadsheet. so let me try to simplify. First thing you need to do is bank your 85 BWV points from your 2004 allocation. You do not need to wait until you close, they can do it as soon as the points are in your account. I think your idea is the best idea, becaue it will give you all BWV points for that October 06 reservation, and thus you'll have the 11 month window where you'll need it. So, you plan on using your:

40 VWL points Aug 05
85 BWV points Aug 04 Banked
106 VWL points Aug 06 Borrowed

To get the 231 you need for your August 05 Ressie

For your October 06 Ressie

85 BWV points Aug 05 Banked
82 BWV points Aug 06

to get the 167 you need for your October 06 Ressie

You'll need to then either bank all remaining 06 use year points from both VWL and BWV contract after August 1, 2006. Or of course use then later in the year before July 31, 2007!!!!!!

That makes the most sense to me!!! Enjoy those trips!!!

Edited to add: When making the August 2005 reservation, make sure MS uses the BWV points for the AKL reservation first. I'd make that reservation first, so the BWV points will be used there, since they can, and then make the VWL studio reservation. You can't borrow points if you have points remaining and since you need the BWV points to make the AKL ressie, you have to use those first before you'll be allowed to borrow VWL points, and you need the VWL points to make the studio ressie at 11 months out. (sorry about that run-on)

Lori, thanks for your help. I'm glad to know we can use our points that way. Now I just have to keep it all straight! I think that spreadsheet idea is a good one, LOL!! :)
