Hi gang! Happy Sunday.

Becky - How was Alton? Details...we need details!

Piglet - Congrats to ds! His cars looks so cute!

Roseprincess - Healing hugs to you for your dad and daughter. Have fun at the Blue and Gold. DS crossed over last year and has had a good year. He is taking a little time off right now but I hope he goes back.

Slo - Disney Dollars are a good idea. I might steal that one from you for ds Easter basket. He is already getting Mickey flip flops, a notepad, and a pin all found on clearance at the Disney store.

Off to the hot dog sale today. I hope we sell lots. Then off to make a donation to the local women's shelter. And, corned beef and cabbage are calling my name for tonight.

Lori

Hi guys! :wave2:

Quiet day here so far. Went to mass this morning, yikes! It was so crowded :crowded: , we got there a couple of minutes late and ended up parking 2 blocks away! With it being Palm Sunday it was long too.

DD11 is growing up on me :sad1: , Thursday after gymnastics she met a group of girls from her class at the library to work on a project. They're there again today to finish up. This is her first real solo outing.....ah they grow up so fast ;) .

Going to in-laws for dinner as we do nearly every Sunday. FIL is fixing chicken, again ;) . Not that I'm complaining but we have it about 8 out of 10 times.

slo - yes Oak Brook Mall is outdoors. It is simply beautiful on a sunny spring or summer day, lots of fountains and flowers. It is a fairly upscale mall (lots of high end stores) but there is a Disney Store there!

Well, I'm off to finish up packing for the kids. Only 5 days til vacation!! :beach:

Hi everyone, I'm a new arrival here. I didn't even know there was a Chicago thread - I was pointed this way by a kind fellow DISer (thanks sk8leigh :) ). Anyway, I'm glad to be here with local peeps.

Howdy!! :wave2:

We've been so busy today! This is the first chance I've had to sit and relax.....by myself!!! :)

We did a total change around of DD's room and DS's room. Lots of reorganizing. Laundry, bathroom cleaning, playing games with the kids. And I made a huge dinner, actually an early Easter dinner. :goodvibes As we are having a brunch next Sunday. I made a ham and au gratin potatoes from scratch!! Man they were good!!! :goodvibes

slo I always forget something when I'm out shopping. Even with a list!!!
I think Lauren still believes in the E.B. :confused3 She hasn't questioned it this year.....yet!!
If she doesn't I ijust hope she has the sense enough to not ruin it for Hunter!!!

irish dancer How was the chicken??

piglet Cute pics!!! :)

traces As for dolls: Look for eyes that don't open or close properly. Make sure arms and legs rotate properly. I bought 2 dolls at the sale last year and they were almost perfect. Only one has a slight mark on her face and you can only till in a certain light at a certain angle, hence why I didn't catch it at the sale. Oh well! you can barely see it! :)
We also bought furniture, doll clothes, girl size clothes, books, accessories...all of which we thoroughly checked out.

ZeroMyHero :welcome: to the Chicago thread!!!
Love your name!! :thumbsup2

Good Evening everyone! :wave2: Hope everyone has had a fabulous weekend! It sure has flown by!

Slo - Thanks for the heads up on the JCPenney sale! I got everything on sale plus an extra 20% off... it was great! Picked up 2 pair of capris, a pair of shorts and a few shirts! oh and i stopped at the disney store and bought a cute tink denim skirt! i wanted the pink minnie mouse capris but they didn't have my size:sad2:

Sk8Leigh - I always have a hard time finding bras that I like and fit me well! I wound up ordering a couple of the Angel bras from VS online. They are the only one that VS carries in my size that aren't push up, or flimsy!:confused3

ZeroMyHero - :welcome: Glad you could join us!

ZeroMyHero -- Welcome.

Now on to the basic Alton stuff -- just a FYI in case you are like us and pronounced his name "All ton" it's actually "AL ton". I knew I heard that once before on TV and did a double-take when I heard it but they had a person that is a judge on Iron Chef America there doing the Q&A section with him (to which I can't remember her name). and she specifically asked "Is it pronounced ALLton or ALton?"

I have some pictures but they are still in the camera. There were no posed pictures, so you pretty much had to take pictures while in the process of book signings. You couldn't take pictures during the talk & they were pretty strict on that (I saw security go have a chit-chat with people when he saw a flash go off).

We didn't really wait too long to get in. He had his brand new book for sale that isn't even in the bookstores yet. It's related to his Feasting on Asphalt show. It was really weird as they had the host (MSI employee) tell you about the books that you could go buy it now as we had 40 minutes to wait but never told you the title other than it's not out in the stores yet. I only knew it had to do with the Feasting on Asphalt because I saw someone's book quickly. As I had gone out Friday night and just bought his Food + heat = Cooking book & DH really didn't want to get the new book, we passed on it.

The talk went *extremely* fast and unfortunately for ME -- *extremely* over my head scientifically HOWEVER -- the most important part is there was a Disney reference...I nearly fell over laughing. He puts the Mickey symbol up and says "This is the most powerful symbol in the universe" -- Turns out that Mickey is the same symbol for H2O :earsboy: The head being Oxygen and the ears Hydrogon and then he made a comment about Walt Disney knowing what he was doing when he used that symbol and turned in into a mouse! To which he said "was a good thing". :lmao:

He basically talked about Glucose, Water, Protein, Fatty Acids? (there was some other part to it but I think my eyes had glazed over by that point). Basically the most I got out of it was if you control water you can do anything because it's water that you are trying to use everything else to control...either holding onto water or letting it evaporate out and the water/oil keeping from mixing.

The best part was that he would ad-lib as he went along. He was talking and literally stopped mid-sentence when he saw someone yawn and do a "Did you just yawn?" and then did a defeated look but we all got him to keep going.

Then he went off on tangents about things regarding his 8 year old daughter, trying to eat his MIL's turkey and lots of other things that are hard to remember because it would only make sense if you were there. OH...he made lots of jokes about him gaining weight and how "black is sliming" since he was wearing a black sweater.

Then it was time for Q&A, so they set that up as some reference to some show I had no idea what they were talking about (so either before my time or I just live under a rock type of thing). Let's see how many questions I can remember --

how many sock puppets they had & if they had names? No, they don't have names except for a few that are intricate ones (they made a special one to use for sticking his tongue on ice, I think he was a bacteria? That one is called "tongue") but usually it's more of a just get me a yeast.

His favorite sound -- is a new one and has nothing to do with food. It's the sound of his DD laughing under water (they just got scuba certified and he did something goofy) he heard her laughing with the regulator on.

His favorite episode so far is the Vampire one on Garlic

Yes, on the Feasting on Asphalt they did go into one place and back out and decided they would NOT film there it was that bad. He didn't necessarily like a lot of the food he ate on that show.

We found out that he doesn't care for Dunkin Donuts but IF he were a Donut he would be a plain Buttermilk one with Glaze. AND he would want to be dunked (this was a weird line of questioning that wasn't even on the cards they handed out for people to write questions on -- it was just another one of those off on a tangent things!!!). He was finished with what kind of donut and the interview person said "If you were a donut would you want to be dunked?"

One question was if he was ever paid to be a chef! :rotfl: :lmao: (a lot of these were from kids).

They are constantly researching for shows & I think each show starts with 300? pages of research and they condense it down to about 100 when the show is done.

He also takes big bites at the end because they use real food and he's HUNGRY by the time they put the food out at the end.

He came up with the show because he wanted to explain things in a non-boring way (which he went and made a reference back to the yawner saying "I thought I was doing a good job until now").

Let's see -- I think that's about it. After he was done talking, they had the line for the book signing, which we got into right away. We were probably in the middle for seating and that actually worked to our advantage upon exiting...yeah, we didn't sit right up front but then those people were the last ones out to get in line for the signing too. There was still a HUGE line when we got done.

They had cheese, crackers, fruit platter type things you could munch on afterwards but it was all gone by the time we were done with our line. That was OK, I would rather be done early with the book signing rather than waiting longer to just much on some cheese & crackers.

As we were leaving we each got a goody bag from Dominick's -- It was a black bag that I'm assuming they are now selling like all other stores that you can take in to put your groceries in vs. paper or plastic. In it there was this cool measuring tool, a mini spatula, an energy/focus type canned drink (I got "focus" in my bag but DD got "energy" in hers), Organic Tortilla Chips & Organic crackers. So, now I have 4 measuring things, 4 mini spatulas, 4 bags & 4 bags of chips/crackers (hmm....I'm hosting Easter -- I think they need to come out for then).

We got done before 1:30, so we went and got the tickets for the Glass Experience at 2:00, so we could get lunch. It was funny because you could tell who went to see Alton as they were all walking around with the Dominick's bags!!! I went and took ours to the car as they were HEAVY to carry around.

The Disney Patrol was also there but was going to be there at the exact same time as the talk so we missed them.

Any questions? I'll try to answer them and I will try to get the pictures up (they aren't that great but it's what I could get!).

Just an FYI -- I thought the Glass Experience was neat because they do a glass blowing thing (although it seems really fast -- we were actually there for 2 of them. One was at 2:40 and one was at 3:20). The one at 3:20 is they pick a "You draw it, we make it", they pick one out of the pile of them. It's pre-picked though so I have no idea how they decide. I don't think I would pay to go see it again but it was neat to go see once. So, for traces7 if you have time you might want to check it out. I don't think it will be horrible if you miss it though, just not something we have seen every day as we don't have the Corning Glass Museum nearby which is where these master glass makers were from. I did learn an interesting tidbit that if you see a glass vase that has a rim of color at the top that is made by hand because a machine can't do that. I believe the guy called it a lip rim. I did not know that before.

Good Evening all,

I haven't had the chance to catch up on my reading for awhile it's been a crazy month.

I do have a Disney question to ask.

We are thinking of going to Disneyland instead of Disney World. Here is my problem/question,

I have never been to Disneyland before...I would think it will be awesome to go but for some reason I feel like I am betraying Disney World if I go. I know it's weird and I am being crazy but Disney World is like my second home and I'm worried that I might be disappointed by going to Land instead of World.

For those of you who have done both what do you think? I am thinking of staying at either Paradise Pier or Disneyland Hotel for 6 days or 1 week at Animal Kingdom Lodge if we decide World.

I am interested in your thoughts and thank you for helping me in my insanity.

Sounds like a great time at MSI, Becky. I knew it was Al-ton from watching Feasting on Asphalt. I would love to see that book, because I thought the show was awesome.

For those of you who have done both what do you think?

I think they're both very different and both great! Disneyworld is *much* larger and has much more to do. But, Disneyland is much more detailed and much more magical. Most of the people on these boards are here because they are the type who can truly *feel* the magic. I believe that the magic is *much* stronger at Disneyland. I love all the intimate little corners of Disneyland. I love the added details such as the queen looking out the upstairs window at Snow White's Scary Adventure. I love the Alice in Wonderland ride. The new Nemo subs (rehabbed 20,000 leagues ride) are awesome. *Much* better than the new Nemo ride in Epcot.

It's smaller. You won't need as much time to see everything, but you won't be disappointed.

For those of you who have done both what do you think? I am thinking of staying at either Paradise Pier or Disneyland Hotel for 6 days or 1 week at Animal Kingdom Lodge if we decide World.

I love DL! I never had much of an interest in going, but then when I happened to be in SoCal and went, I loved it! It is more detailed, and there are many rides that are better there than at WDW (like PotC, and all of Toon Town, and Fantasyland is much cooler), as well as many that WDW doesn't have.

If you're just going to DL and DCA, I don't know that you'd need 6 days, though. But if you're doing other things in the area that's different. I've only been to DL & DCA for 3 days at a time, I think, and that seemed like enough, although if you're with your kids you might move slower and want to do different things from me.

Don't feel like you're betraying WDW. DL is Walt's park! :wizard:

Have a good day today everyone!!!

Morning..

Yesterday was busy with housework stuff.. made the boys clean out their closets.. I told then if they wouldn't or couldn't wear it to bring it down to the living room and I wouls fold it and give it away.. well Eric found a lot of his stuff in Geoff's closet and Geoff found his missing jeans in Eric's and I found a bunch of my tshirts etc.. so it was a very worhwhile exercise.. and now I have 3 big piles of stuff to give away..

I made orange chicken and veggie fried rice yesterday for dinner.. It was very good..The orange sause was easy.. just orange marmelade, balsamic vingear and olive oil..

Well today is work, then boy scouts so gonna be busy..

but first to ketchup..

I also went to Victoria's Secret to look for a bra. I'm seriously hitting desperation point. The kind I've been wearing hasn't been made for a while, so I've got like 3 or 4 that I've been wearing forever, and they're really about to fall apart. So I was finally like, I just have to try something. I haven't been able to find something I like for the longest time. Everything is either push-up, stretchy, or flimsy. :confused3 But I finally found one to try today. Hopefully I'll like it! (Sorry, guys, I know it's TMI, but the ladies will understand.)
! :cheer2:

Leigh. I am in the same bra place as you.. I have been wearing a certain one for years and years and years.. they don't make it anymore and i need to buy some new ones.. but I can't find any that aren't bouncing.. I am thinking of going to a special bra place and trying that..

Busy day!
Nathan won "Best Scout Theme" and was very happy about that. Not the greatest pictures, but here you go.

Congrats on the pinewood win.. the car looks great..

Welcome Zero.. stop by often

DL is very special.. It is WDW but it is lots of fun. once you get past the castle is little..love the things that are in DL that aren't at WDW. We stayed at the Grand Californian for a few days and it was very nice.. But Eric said that if we go again he would like to stay at the DL hotel.. it looked like a lot of fun..

Morning everyone!

Getting ready to go for Lauren's hearing test, be back later.

Morning everyone! :wave2:

Becky ~ I love Alton! I have both his cookbooks, however, I'm not a very good cook! :confused3 He has some great recipes though; very informative!

Geffric ~ Orange Chicken sounds delicious. the sauce wasn't difficult to make? I get very nervous cooking. I'm a better baker! I make a mean cake! Maybe I'll get the courage to try it! :)

Have a good day everyone! :flower3:

Good Monday Morning and Happy St. Patrick's Day!!! :shamrock: :shamrock:

More cleaning in store for me today. I figured that since I was productive yesterday I should try to continue that today.

Something funny to share.....
DS got DD's old bedroom set which included a dresser with a mirror.
He has never had a mirror in his room before. This made him very excited for some reason!! :) So after dinner last night, he gets up from the table and I asked him where he was off to. And he told me, "I'm going to go look at my reflection in my mirror.". :rotfl2: And off he went to do just that!!
Then this morning he was taking forever to get dressed for school so I asked him what he was doing and he says he was looking at himself in the mirror again!!!!!!

slo Glad to hear the dinner was good!! Did you eat the cabbage? I don't like it myself.
Hope you can find a dress.

Disneynut You and the kids will enjoy DL. But I agree, I don't think you'll need 6 days. Unless you have other plans to visit other places near by.

Becky Thanks for sharing about your trip to see Alton!! My DD just loves watching his shows!!

Morning all,

Lá Fhéile Pádraig Sona Duit! Anyone else celebrating St. Patty's today with an Americanized dinner of corned beef and cabbage?

Becky - do I love Alton! Thanks for sharing your experience - wish I could have seen it for myself!

slo - did your MIL or FIL make the soda bread? I tried to make it last year, but I don't think it turned out very well. I bought a loaf from Dominick's bakery for this year's dinner - hope it's good.

everyone else - thanks for all the welcomes, it makes a girl feel good. :)

piglet Make sure to tell us of the results of Lauren's test.

geffric When my DH still lived at home with his parents, in his early 20's before we were married, his grandmother also lived there and she took care of the laundry. She was always sticking clothes in the wrong closet. I remember once finding very grandma looking tops in DH's closet and having a good laugh!!

Lá Fhéile Pádraig Sona Duit! Anyone else celebrating St. Patty's today with an Americanized dinner of corned beef and cabbage?

My DH is Irish but is very anti-corned beef and cabbage!!

I've heard soda bread can be tricky to bake. I hope you enjoy the store bought one!! :thumbsup2
