Calling all Canadians!!

Does anyone know anything about moving from the U.S. to Canada? What are some things to consider? (other than the increased airfare to WDW)

Also, how expensive is it to live in Toronto? Is it as clean and safe as I have heard?

Does anyone have any info on Ryerson University?

Personally, No! However, you should visit our immigration website to learn more. I believe it's done by the point system here.

I don't know about University. I know you pay more when you are from a different country.

I believe Canada is a very clean country in general, as for safe, depends on where you are coming from.

Ryerson is a Polytechincal University, meaning they are more hands on then a standard university here in Canada. Their grads have excellent post-grad empolyment rates. They also have some great programs, that you can not find out other Universities here in Ontario. http://www.ryerson.ca/ & http://www.ryerson.ca/ualca/international/index.html . A co-worker of mine is doing a second degree at Ryerson, she has enjoyed her classes there.

AS for flying, if you do get a licence and a car, drive to BUF airport and the cost does not go up! That is what we do, haven't flown from YYZ, Person Airport for years.

It can be fairly expensive in central downtown Toronto, but if you can chose a location in one of the outlaying areas on the TTC then it can be ok. We have Sam's Club(in the suburbs) and Costco(with in city limits.) Check with the University for student housing if that works for you.

Clean and safe? yeah in relation to cities of the same size in the USA. Other Canadians might say that Toronto is the least clean, safe city. I think last year we have less then 70 murders. The mayor is on a clean streets kick right now and local news likes to exposes on dirty alleys and such. We have city recycling programs.

There are safe, and unsafe, places to go in Toronto, but most of the places you'd want to go are pretty safe. As for costs, you may experience some sticker shock with the price of accomodations (3 bedroom apartments start at $1100), but food isn't bad, and there are all manner of bargains to be had for clothing, etc, if you know where to shop. And we have some nifty neighbourhoods, and lots of greenbelt and recreational programs for your kids.

I took a course at Ryerson (work skills upgrading), and it was pretty good. I didn't get into the social aspects because, at the time, it was 2 hours away from my home, but Ryerson seems like a good school.

ETA: as far as increased airfare, if you have a car, the drive to WDW is gorgeous.

I went to Ryerson (many moons ago) in the Business program and enjoyed it.
What program or you panning on taking.

They have an accounting position opening. I got an email from the search committee about applying. However, I have never even considered moving to Canada, so all that is involved seems ominous. But, I have heard great things about Canada. Just checking it out with my DIS friends.

I have some info at work about moving to Canada from the US for school and work and immigrating here. My sisters Fiance is moving up here from PA and says he can't wait to become a Canadian he loves it here. TO is expensive but then again you will have to compare it to where you are coming from and what the cost of living is there.

If you're looking at Ryerson as a place of employment, and not a school, then more important than its reputation as a school would be its location. It's right downtown, easy access to the subway and streetcars. It has good campus security, so you should feel quite comfortable getting around.

We have lived in Toronto all our lives...I can't ever recall a moment that I have felt fearful, or scared while walking the streets. We are not "partiers", or clubbers, so factor that in. We live in what a lot of people consider a "bad neighbourhood", but again we have never not felt save. You will LOVE it here!
