Calling All 8/19/06 Special Western Cruisers! AKA "The Cruisin' Castaways" Part 2

Here is our list of things we do before we leave the house on vacation.
Most of the irregular items are lessons learned:

Make sure all toilets are flushed
Make sure all doors are locked
Make sure all windows are locked
Make sure garage door is down (you don't want to know)
Make sure all garbage disposals have been run
Make sure all plants are thoroughly watered
Stop mail
Stop newspaper
Unplug all electronics (TVs, computers)
Make sure TiVO is on and records favorite shows
Make sure washing machine is empty
Let neighbors know we'll be out of town
Make sure all garbage cans in kitchen are empty
Make sure dishwasher is empty or clean
Make sure refrigerator(s) and freezer(s) doors are closed
Make sure fence gates are closed
Make sure all lights are off except one
Make sure alarm clocks are off
Make sure the garage door is down as we drive away
Double check the garage door is down as we drive away
Have the boys check the garage door is down as we drive away


After our trip to Florida at Christmas last year, we came home and our garage door was up. After a terrifying search through the house, we realized no one had been in the house or garage. So for ten days the garage door was wide open and the door into the house wasn't locked. We assume there was something blocking the door when we left and we didn't notice that after the door started to go down that it went back up. We were lucky. It also confirms we live in a safe neighborhood. We did spend the next several weeks trapping mice that had come in for some warmth.

Triple check the garage door is down
Drive around the block and come back to be sure the garage door is down
Call neighbor during trip to verify the garage door is down
Place a webcam outside so we can check at anytime the garage door is down


...you get the picture. We are getting close now...maybe I should start checking now that the garage door is down.

Anna: I just copied your list ! Thanks, one time I had left and came back from the store and my garage door was open. I was terrified. My DD said Mom you closed the door , I said, I know, I know..........Well I forgot about that till I read your post. Never would have thought about the toilet, yuck.

After reading through posts I decided to order some theme clothes. I ordered pirate clothes, 60's & 70's clothes. For crying out loud, tell me there are any more themes, I'm wearing myself out

It's hard to believe that one week from tomorrow my family will be heading back to Florida!!! Looking forward to meeting everyone!!! Those who are leaving us this weekend, have safe travels and we will see you next week!!!

Hi Paula! Loved the pics of Maggie awww! I'm happy (read:miserable) to report that I called the bank about the error and they corrected it. Just like the 9 million, they took this mistake back too So even though I can't buy everyone the 2008 Reunion Cruise (I like the sound of that already!), my offer to buy everyone a smoothie still stands. Of course, I'll be making the smoothies, so you all will have to bring your own glass!

Jen: Try and concentrate on work, as difficult as that is!! Even my husband has cruise-fever; he has a big presentation at work this afternoon and he said that at the very end of it, he plans on mentioning the fact that after that (the implementation of what his presentation includes), he's off on another Disney cruise. LOL

Terry, I had to laugh (quietly, inside...) as I read you post b/c I was reading it (sneaking it) on my blackberry, while participating in a conference call on my the speakerphone on my boss's blackberry while my boss was driving! How's that for multi-tasking!


AND...Am I the LAST ONE to say this???? I FINALLY got my docs today!!! alas, I am too pooped to do my docs dance. ok, I'll give it a try: WooHoo!!!

The magnets are really not that heavy and I'm afraid it might be too late for some. I am in the farthest reaches of the continental U.S. It seems like it can take two or three days for a letter to get to Seattle from here...let alone the East Coast. I would hazard a guess (sometimes I know I've read to many books when I come up with sayings like that) that the magnets I made for others are about 20% of all the magnets I am bringing....so no problems.

I just got my suitcases down from the attic....I was already packed at this time last year...

I packed all the name tags. I have 200 of them so hopefully that will be enough. The green Mickey got a bit stretched during the printing so the tag looks like this: No it doesn't I'm just kiddin' but it doesn't look perfect & I AM a perfectionist!
