Please could you advise me as to how large you have been able to print your pictures without a loss of picture quality.
I have been shooting in RAW if this makes any difference.
I recently went to the festival of the masters at DTD and spoke with a few photographers who had quite large prints on display that they claim to have taken with 8 mega pix cameras.

obviously the d40 is only 6.2.

what succes have you had printing with your d40 pics?

For years professional DSLRs only had 6MP and even 4MP sensors, yet they produced images that looked fine when blown up to poster size. Photohsop and third-party software can interpolate an image so it looks good at large sizes. It won't be able to add detail that's not in the original image, but it will add pixels that blend in with the captured pixels, so the final product looks acceptable good. Keep in mind that the as images get larger, they are usually viewed from farther away. If you viewed a blown-up image from the same distance as you viewed a 4"x6", you'd see a difference. Take a step or two back to view the poster at its normal viewing distance, and it will look just as good as the 4x6 in your hand. Just keep cropping to a minimum.

I have a D40 and while I have not had any posters made from any pictures I have taken, I did have an 8x10 book made from candids taken at a wedding. Many of the images in the book were one to a page so almost 8x10 in size and the quality was quite good. Some of the images were even ones that were cropped and then enlarged to fill the page and I was still very pleased with the results. The book was put together as a wedding gift for the bride and groom and they were very pleased also with the pictures and the quality.

I have a D50 which has the same sensor as the D40. I have 2 images (1 shot in JPEG only and 1 shot in RAW) that I enlarged and have hanging on our walls. They are enlarged to 12x18 and look amazing. I also have a lot of 8x12's a few 8x10's and an 11x14 (cropped down to about 70% of the original size). Oh, almost forgot about the 20x30, which is a tad on the noisy side, but it is a long exposure night shot yet still looks great.

I have a 24 X 36 inch print of Cinderella's castle hanging framed in my office taken with my Nikon D70 which is a 6.2 mp camera. It was shot in raw. It is taken at dusk and their is enough detail to see Tinkerbell's guidewire if you look closely. I get many many complements on this poster.

I would not think you would want to bigger than that. If I am not wrong I think the sensor in the D40 was the same or similar sensor to the D70.

I have the Nikon D40 and I blew this picture up to 16x20 and I'm really happy with the results. I've never shot in RAW either. I wish the image had been framed just a little better, but I couldn't fly back to Florida to try it again.

I have many 13x19 prints that I did with a 3 megapixel Epson camera. I got many compliments from the pros.
