Just booked flights to Vegas in the BA sale. :thumbsup2
We're going to have 5 nights there (including a wee trip to a Chapel:lovestruc) and then drive down to Anaheim for 5 nights in a condo across the street from Disneyland.

Any tips for DL as we've only done WDW before?

Firstly congratulations!
You will love DL :goodvibes
The great thing about the DL parks is that you can easily hop from one to another as they are right across the entrance plaza from each other
Whatever you do don't miss Fantasmic! at Disneyland (so much better that WDW's version in my opinion) and World Of Color at California Adventure is amazing as well
Both shows can get really busy but you can book a dessert package with reserved seating for Fantansmic! and a lunch/dinner package with standing in a reserved section for WOC if you don't mind paying the extra
Enjoy!

Congrats on the wedding.
Vegas is my second fav place after Orlando and can't wait to go again although it's going to be a few years.
Where you going to stay? there are always loads of deals about for vegas, check out fatwallet for any codes and direct with the hotels, this year we stayed at the Bellagio for £80 a night.

No really advice for Disneyland, we've been 3 times and always stayed in a hotel directly accross the street, it's great to walk to and from the parks.

Thanks.:thumbsup2

We're taking DD (14) with us so have opted for a couple of 2 bedroom condo's. The one in Vegas is on the Strip across the road from Paris and the one in Anaheim is across the road from the Disney car parks.

We're thinking of doing DC for Xmas next year, dh & I went a few years ago in September and although it was insanely hot we loved it!! Quite a few bits that are different to DW!
We stayed a few miles away and hated the fact we was so far, so we would def stay more onsite :)

Congratulations :goodvibes

Sounds fab. How long does it take to drive between vegas and disney?

First the bad news, we were in Vegas this year, we found it like Blackpool, with extra alcohol.
Having said that and sans people walking down the street with cans of beer at 10 in the morning, we went to Cirque Mystere which was good, the buffet at Treasure Island less so. We renewed our wedding vows in a helicopter over the strip which was quite good fun, our DD of 11 never had a clue until the stretch limo came to collect us.
The buffet at the Bellagio is a bit more expensive but much better value. Most of the Casinos smell of stale smoke and stale booze, not apealing. We did a bus trip to the Grand Canyon which I would recommend, long day but worth it.
The drive to LA is about 4 - 4.5 hours, easy until you get to around the San Bernadino area, then the traffic congeals. You realy need satnav, the signs around LA are piss poor. We used a Nexus7 with the Tomtom app and never had a problem. Seven lanes of nose to tail traffic at 60mph with 4 merging lanes, never seen anything like it.
We skipped Disney as the California tickets are rely expensive. We decided to stay in Buena Park and did Knotts Berry Farm (bigger rides and smaller crowds) an LA tour and a visit to the USS Iowa.
Hope that helps a bit.

We did both of these and it was so worth it. I'd recommend choosing Carthay Circle for WOC, it's worth doing just to see the restaurant let alone the food (which was delicious!), we also did a package at Ariel's Grotto but I wouldn't recommend there. Also really enjoyed Blue Bayou and if you're really into Disney history do the Walk in Walt's Footsteps tour as you get to go into Walt's apartment. :thumbsup2

Well Haloo There!
We flew out and back to LA, was a lot cheaper than Vegas and slightly cheaper than Frisco. Surprisingly it was just around the price of Florida flights. We ended up flying Air New Zealand who we would happily use again. Remember if you are a one way car rental there will be extra charges as you are returning the car in a different state!
We spent 3 full days in LA, Hollywood Tour, Knotts, shopping and USS Iowa. Picking up your car at LAX and straight into that traffic is frightening but a taxi out to Buena Park or Annaheim is about $110, so try booking transport beforehand. From there we headed up the coast with stops at Moro Bay and Monterey. If you want to visit the Aquarium, then get a San Francisco City Pass. That gives you the Monterey Aquarium, you can upgrade it to do the Alcatraz tour, SF city municipal transport including the cable cars, De Jong museum and the Exploratorium. Alcatraz was a very good trip, best audio tour I have ever taken and an unusual souvenier shop. Ran out of time to do the De Jong as we only had 2 nights and one full day there.
We then trundled across the bay to Marin county to see the John Muir Forrest then off into Mariposa for Yosemite. Stayed there 3 nights with 2 full days in the park. It is about 45 mins drive from the park but it is one of the closest towns to the park, you can get accomodation closer but it is in the middle of nowhere. We stayed at the Miners Inn which I would recommend, very frriendly, complimentary breakfast, very good onsite restaurant with the most helpful waitress I have ever run across. One day spent in the valley itself, Bridal Veil falls, visitor center and Mirror Lake Trail. Next day up Glacier Point road with a break to walk the Taft Point Trail. Astonishing views here and Glacier point itself, afternoon at the Mariposa Grove.
From there over the Tioga pass (with photostops) to Mono Lake and Bodie ghost town, overnighting in Mammoth Lakes. Next day up to Devils Postpile then drove to Furnace Creek in Death Valley, 9000 ft down to minus 250 feet!
Death valley is fascinating, visited Scottys Castle, then some bits in the south of the valley before scuttling off to Vegas. You already know what we did there, used Grand Canyon Tours for the trip, would use them again without hesitation.
If we went back again, we would spend a little more time on the California Coast, another night in Death Valley watching the shooting stars and coyotes, and cut out LA. It is one huge urban sprawl and while it was nice to see once, it would not encourage me back.
If you need any more details or where we stayed, just ask.

:thumbsup2 fantastic info! did you pre-book all your accommodation, or 'go with the flow'? am a bit apprehensive now to spend so long in LA...:confused3

what was the drive from LA to Las Vegas like? are there planty of stop-offs as we'll have 2 kids who may need the loo every half hour!!:rotfl:

We had pre booked all the accomodation via a mix of booking sites depending on who had the best deal, mailnly used trip advisor for reviews. Plenty of paces to stop until you hit San Bernadino, then it is freeway all the way! It all goes to pot there and depending on the traffic it could take you a while to get there!

We had some very good deals, we paid about 90 gbp for our room in Death Valley, if you went as a walk up it was $320 a night!

A good starting point is the book, just tried looking for it and can't find it, California Roadtrip, I bought mine through Amazon. If in doubt spend more tine on the coast, make an extra stop near some Big Sur or similar, you won't be dissapointed, it is stunning scenery, and dont miss Hearst Castle. Visit California will send you some useful maps and guides as well.

The drive from LA is pretty simple once you get going it's pretty much a straight road all the way, there isn't that much to see in all honesty it all looks the same, we've done the drive twice and have only stopped once, I will always remember getting out of the car and it was like standing in front of a hair dryer.
We did stop the second time just outside Vegas for a meal on our way in.

We've also driven from Las vegas to San Diego, again no problems at all.

Love Vegas, love the tackiness of it!! lol:) there is so much going on at any time of day.
