California Resident Ticket Discounts?

We are going to DL in October and our friends from LA are going with us. They said that California residents get a small discount on tickets. Do we need to have them buy our tickets well in advance? Can they still get the discount on "extra" tickets for visitors who live out of state? Does Disneyland do anything to keep people from doing this?

There is no "discount" for those of us that live in Ca. There is an option for an annual pass for Ca residents that has more block out days. Also Ca residents can make payments on APs.

There have, in the past, been discounts for Southern California residents. They are not currently offering any, though.
