I read in one of my guide books that California Grill serves "wood-fired california pizzas", is this not at dinner? I looked up the menu on allears and it doesn't list pizza for dinner. I would love to eat there during the fireworks but my family is pretty ordinary and i'm worried it would be too much for them and a waste.

California Grill only serves dinner.

On the menu they are probably listed as "flatbread"

And they are not the ordinary pizza with mozzarella, tomato sauce and pepperoni.

There is not much ordinary about the eclectic menu at California Grill. It's a contemporary California cuisine and is not a place to go and expect to eat "plain Jane" types of food. This is a fine dining place that has an outstanding wine selection with waiters very knowledgeable in food pairing.

They do have a viewing platform for fireworks but there is no guarantee that you will get seated at a table from which you can actually view them. Most of the tables do not have a fireworks view so you have to be prepared to go outside on the observation platform.

On a previous trip we managed to get out on the balcony to see the fireworks... is this still open?

The 11th floor deck is open, but it's restricted to patrons of the restaurant.

I think persons who had an ADR for earlier can come back if they save the receipt. But to go up there, you have to patronize the restaurant.

As TDC Nala said, these are flatbreads, not pizza. Toppings vary, and can include bacon, lettuce. tomato, pulled pork, etc. Once in awhile they'll have one that might resemble a pizza with cheese, etc.
For me, they are just an appetizer.
You can check the menu out on our site--CG really isn't a "steak and potato" place.

The 4 cheese flatbread has always been on the menu when we've dined there. It is not spicy or very unusual. That might fit your needs. I've ordered a flatbread as my entree following a salad....a beet salad in season!
