I've made a reservation at the California Grill for my birthday! The California Grill is my all-time favorite restaurant! I've never tried any of the sushi options and I am thinking of getting sushi as my entree. 2 questions.. 1. how big are the sushi portions? Good enough for an entree? 2. what are people's reviews of the California Roll? Thanks!!

I've only eaten the Spicy Kazan roll (which is delicious) and it is a large, entree-sized portion. My husband and I split it as an appetizer in April.

I got the Spicy Kazan Roll for an appetizer and ate it all by myself for an appetizer. Then I had an entree. But the pork two ways is kind of a small entree (I got quite a number of comments on my FB feed about how small the entree looked, lol). I also had dessert. maybe I am a pig :D I am more likely to do an app at a signature due to smaller portions on the entrees though. Here is the roll and it was amazing.

For me two orders of sushi would probably do it for me but I am not sure how much smaller the generic rolls are compared to the specialty ones... that was a roll with a pile of bay scallops in the middle.

Good choice on going to CG for sushi. It was absolutely the best I have had anywhere. I would say two orders would be enough for for a meal for one person.

I realize my review is a bit skewed. My husband and I go to several different sushi restaurants in our port city and surrounding neighborhoods. As such, we have a wider variety of experiences from which to compare California Grill sushi. We went in early 2015 for a dinner + fireworks experience. By and large my greatest compliment would be to the servers and staff. Next would be the inventive cocktails, and our enjoyment of the charcuterie plate as a delightful appetizer.

My greatest disappointment was the sushi rolls we ordered. We found them uninspired and wholly a poor representation of what "could be" for multi-textured and flavorful rolls. On a rating of 1 to 10, where 10 would include a balanced opposition of textures and flavors, I found Cali Grill to be about 4. That said, of course there are those that would say the rolls are of a particular region and represent faithfully that regions simplicity. I can't speak to that. I can say I found them entirely bland and unbalanced. It seemed to be the way this restaurant approached ingredients of a roll, not that it was an "off night." I can't recall the specific rolls, since I just made sure never to order sushi rolls at CG in the future.

All that said, I hope you enjoy your time at Cali Grill. It was a fun experience, and we might go back sometime depending on the menu options. I hope you have a great time.

I think the sushi portions are enough for a meal. When we take my older sons, we get cocktails, a couple of flatbreads as an app, and one sushi each, and have dessert afterwards. I couldn't eat the sushi and an entree as well.

Look at google images for many pictures of the sushi there.
