I think I heard somewhere that the sushi at California Grill is made by the #1 female sushi maker in the US? and that it is the best sushi at WDW?

is this true?

I love sushi and usually get it at a local korean restaurant.. what I'm also wondering is.. HOW can sushi get any better? I mean, I understand you have to use the freshest ingredients... but other than that.. how can you make sushi better than good sushi at a local restaurant?

thanks! :thumbsup2

Yoshi is the head sushi maker in California Grill. Our whole family love sushi and sashimi. To make really good sushi, you must have fresh sushi grade fish and the sushi rice must be made perfectly. I have had sushi elsewhere in which the rice has too much vinegar taste or too hard. REALLY BAD.

Chef Yoshi is an elite female Sushi Chef, and I believe is one of two at her level in the world. So yes, she is outstanding. None of the sushi at CG is too adventurous, and I even got my MIL to try sushi for the first time by telling her about Yoshi. We've never had a bad sushi experience at CG.

I love sushi, and I eat it at least once a month. The sushi that I had at the California Grill was BY FAR the best I've ever eaten. As the above poster mentioned, in addition to fresh ingredients the rice itself is key. However, Yoshi also adds creative combinations that aren't what you would find in your neighborhood sushi shop.

This is a sushi platter that we ordered in Aug 2007
- California Roll (made with real lump crab, not imitation)
- Spicy Tuna Roll
- Shrimp Tempura Roll (wrapped in white nori, or soy paper, and complimented with mango and watermelon as well as an orange ginger dipping sauce)
- Ahi Tuna 3 ways

The first sushi platter was so good that we went back another night in Aug 2007.
- Shrimp Tempura Roll
- Hurricane Roll (spicy crab, shrimp, tuna, cucumber and tempura crunch)

You guys make me wanna try sushi, which I've never really had an interest in before. It just looks so *pretty*. *sigh* I have no space in my trip for California Grill!! Bad DISers, bad!!

:flower3: Kitten, you have to make space for California Grill somewhere if you can!! the atmosphere + the food experience makes it one of my fav restaurants there...especially if you go during wishes, it's amazing!:dance3:

We've been before, and actually... well, we definitely enjoyed the food! But it was kind of a madhouse for us. We waited *forever*, and the bar was so incredibly packed. We finally found a table, and we sat and sat and sat, and no one ever came to take a drink order or anything, even though a waitress stopped by the table next to us several times. We kept trying to get her attention, but she was zippy.

We had a table near the window, which was nice... until Wishes started and we were mobbed by people from all over the restaurant! I couldn't believe the way people packed up against us like we weren't even sitting there trying to eat our dinner. It was insane.

We would like to go back sometime, but probably not during Wishes, or we'll ask to sit in the wine room. I keep looking at my ADR list, and I could squeeze it into the first part of my trip, before we're on the DxDDP... but the whole point of that part was to save money!!

no if the point of it is to save money i'd avoid cali grill but for great food..you can't beat it!

I am NOT a sushi fan, but the Hurrican Roll at California Grill was OUTSTANDING!!!!!

Fresh, sweet tuna and crab
Fresh, earthy sea weed (NOT dried)
Crunchy, sinful tempura squid (like calamari)
a sweet and spicy sauce, PERFECT amount of spice- NOT too much!
well balanced perfectly cooked rice\
cool, refreshing cucumber
and
nutty, toasty sesame seeds.

Definitely give it a try!

We got very lucky at our last trip to CG. I went and took the kids to see them make the sushi and some people were sitting there. I told the kids not to crowd them and we started talking, they only come to see Yoshi they don't even care about Disney and they started telling me about her, they are part of this cult following she has. When she came over, she let my kids make a sushi roll with her and made me a special "Yoshis Choice" appy for the table. We will go back every time now. She was delightful, and my 8 year old even ate sushi too after that. Now she asks for it all the time, not many kids can say the first time they tried sushi it was made for them by Yoshi and she let them help. I am so excited to go back. The couple did tell me she usually oversees but does not make as much herself anymore. She watches every move everyone makes like a hawk.
