We are going to be in the MK all day and have a ressie for dinner at Cali grill....Is it expected that we leave the park early and change into dress clothes for dinner there or is it okay to go in our park attire, probably shorts?

Hi! I think that there are a lot of opinions about this. My DH & DS's have worn shorts to CG before, but usually have a polo shirt on with them so they feel a little more dressed up. I have worn a skirt or capris or a sundress depending upon the weather. I feel a little better going back to the room and changing, a little fresher for a nice dinner.
Hope you have a wonderful time :)

Park attire is fine. However, no tank tops on men, no swimsuits/coverups, no tattered jeans and no t-shirts with obnoxious or obscene pictures or words. Everything else is fine.

Last June we went back to the room and changed. We wanted to make a nice night out of it.

We are going again this upcoming trip (10 days from now) and we always go and freshen up and wear nicer clothes. Normally, my DH wear dress pants or nice khakis with a dress shirt (sometimes a tie but normally not). I normally wear dress pants and a nice blouse with a sweater just incase I get a chill.
For those of us who abide by the dress code, please change. It tends to ruin the ambiance for everyone else how has respected that dress code and the caliber of restaurent.
:goodvibes

We always plan our trip to CG (or any nice "outside of the park" restaurant) on a day when we go to DHS, AK, or take a day off from the parks. When we go to DHS and AK, we usually knock off those parks before 5:00, so we have plenty of time to shower and change into nice clothes. I would not go to CG all sweaty and in park attire. It is just the way I was raised. Doesn't make me right. But it is my habit. I feel an obligation to the establishment, the employees and the other patrons (some of whom may be trying to enjoy the most special night of their lives) to repect the intended ambiance of the restaurant.

You will be allowed to go into CG with your park attire. But as previous posters mentionned, it is an up-scale restaurant and you may feel a little underdress. Maybe it is just me, but in such cases, I manage to dress accordingly.

when we dined at CG we dressed up (not like FANCY fancy, just dressyish) but we were on our honeymoon so we wanted to make it special. believe me, while we were dining there i noticed people dressed all different ways ranging from theme park casual to dressy. don't worry, people aren't walking around in suits and cocktail dresses! all is accepted and they won't throw you out - most people there are also coming over from a theme park :)

While I understand coming directly from the parks and that attire is permitted, I think you will have a much more enhanced experience if you dress to match the beauty of the food. ;)

Seriously, its a special up-scale meal (at least I don't eat that well every week) and I think you'll enjoy it more if you are also dressed in an up-scale manner.

I had running shoes on in Brown Derby since it is located in the park and I felt a bit out of place, even though plenty of other people had their park clothes on.

Do you have a rental car that you can leave your clothes in? Or a cute tote bag that you can pitch in the lockers in the park?

Otherwise in park attire I would suggest The Wave, which also has fabulous food!

Enjoy!

Last time we went back to the room to change into something nicer, we felt it wasn't worth the bother -- everybody else was in park attire! One group walked in with the men in cargo shorts, t-shirts and sandals. They were escorted to a window table pre-set with flowers, apparently to celebrate something special. I thought to myself, if they dress like that for a special occasion, why should I worry. I pay no attention anymore to what others wear.

Disney tried to establish a business casual dress code. It didn't work.

We all went back to our room and dress a little nicer. My wife and daughters put on a dress and I put on a polo shirt and dress shorts. I had a nice mesh summer hat on. I took it off when we walked into the Contemporary. So at the time that we were at the desk it was in my hand. I was told from the person at the desk that I was not to have hats on. I told her that is why its in my hand. When we got up there I was told the same thing getting off the elevator. It was not on my head so why the attitude? I felt like a jerk for just having it with me. The food was good though.

CG has tried to enforce a dress code and I remember going there in slacks and a collared shirt years ago, but it seems to have gotten more casual lately.

I have seen everything at the CG from men wearing a jacket and tie to very casual attire (t-shirt/shorts/flip-flops).

As someone else posted, I don't really worry what other people wear to the CG. I base my attire depending on where I am coming from prior to dinner (park or resort). I do however try to at least wear a collared shirt but I can't say that I am always sucessful in doing so.

You are at Disney and people do wear very interesting "costumes" in and around the parks and restraunts. :lmao:

My best advice when people ask me what to wear to CG or another fine dining location is to wear what makes you happy. If that is nice pair of pants and a nice shirt - go for it. If it is a mickey T-shirt and shorts, well feel free to do that too.

Just enjoy..

As has been stated, there is NO NEED to dress "up" for California Grill. Some do--some don't. Park attire (including shorts) will be fine.

Another family that freshens up and changes prior to a Signature dinner. I understand there is no NEED to do so and you will be allowed in if you go in park attire. But we believe that at an upscale restaurant we will enjoy our experiece more if we are dressed accordingly.
Enjoy!

Somewhere in between is dressing especially nicely for the parks that day. Dockers and a polo, capris and a collared top. etc. Comfortable yet collared, maybe. :)
