Calculating what you have "spent"

I'd like to start an excel spreadsheet calculating how much I have "spent" based on rack rates for that particular room versus $11/per point. Do I make sense? Have any of you done something similar?

I'd love to see how my investment into my vacations is paying off. For instance, the studio villa I have for Easter Week is $510/night. I am "paying" $220 based on 20 points/night.

I plan on using rack rates for the prince of the room since it would be near impossible to guess what that room would be priced with a code.

Thanks,
Blakely

you'd have to make sure you're comparing apples to apples - so to speak.

i don't know if there are 1 and 2 bdrm's at the deluxe resorts but i haven't seen one at the mod and value ones so if you are comparing "rates" compare studio to studio.

that's what we did (don't have the math anymore) but figured we could stay in the studio dvc's for the same price as half a trip at value and half at mod.

meaning the cost landed about half way between the two levels. does that make sense?

of course we wont always be staying in a studio but for the next several years we will be.

the other thing you should take into account along with renting our points or at least taking the $11 value of doing it - is the annual fees. you can either brake it down by the number of nights your staying or just add that fee top of the ¨point value since it is part of what you have to pay every year even if you rent out your points.

Thanks. I plan on using DVC rack rates. For example, a 2-br using points vs. 2-br using cash through CRO. I don't think we'd really stay in a 2-br if we did not have our DVC. Maybe I should use where we would really stay--like WL or two rooms at a moderate. What do you all think is the best comparison?

I'll also have to factor in dues.

it's like trying to figure out if the DDP is good for you. if you normally eat at cs for all meals you aren't saving anything paying for ts if you wouldn't use it.

but if you would normally eat at least 1 cs and 1 ts that's how you work it out.

same with the dddp - if you eat all your meals at ts then work out the cost but if you eat even 1 cs meal each day then it's prob not worth it.

I have a real basic spreadsheet to do that same thing, but as new members the only thing on there is our upcoming April trip. I'd attach it here but I don't know how to do that. If you want it PM me your e-mail address.

I used the rack rate for the SSR studio (which is where we are staying) but frankly, I'm thinking I should really be using the Moderate resort pricing since that's where we'd stay if we weren't DVC members.

Maybe I'll add that as a seperate column - comparing to both the dollar value received and the dollar vlaue of what we would have done.

I have a spreadsheet too that computes cost (up front and financed), dues (including expected increases), cost per point. It also computes estimated usage of your points, based on an adjustable cost for what it would cost for a room if you weren't a DVC Member. It also allows for Conceirge Collection, Inter. Exchange point switches, as well as annual rack rate increases, rack rate discounts and computes your expected savings based on your computed cost and the computed cost if you weren't a DVC Member.

I've also added a tab so you can put in your actual usage and shows you how much you've saved to date. And a tab for point tracking.

If you'd like it, send me a PM and I'll be happy to send it to you.
