Cake Bake Shop at the BoardWalk is now open

I have never seen glitter on any of our food or desserts, we all tend to get different items. I don’t believe this is true that glitter is on everything.

That stuff is $50/oz. The prices would almost make sense if they lined it up for you as a fancy after meal treat. Hot towels and pixie dust.

There's a lot of "I" in the interview. She seems confident in who she is, how she's doing it, what she's making and charging, where she's doing it, and why she's in charge, solo, and winging it. We shall see if she is right.

Glad there's another option at BW, but not overly interested in cake.
Oh my goodness that is a lot of “I”s lol! There’s someone who really loves herself. Most people would say “we” because although she is the owner she is most certainly not doing all of this alone.

“I don’t think I could have ever done it, if it weren’t for the hard work of myself, and my team of me and I. I thank me for all my hard work.”

I read the article and I disagree. Whenever she talks about preparing food or experiences for customers, she says "we." Whenever she talks about her design choices, recipes, or feelings, she says "I".

Doesn't bother me at all to see a woman proud of her work ☺️

If the prices were similar to other locations, (from what I've heard) they might stand a better chance. But the "Disney tax" here is real.

I realize that @disdani noted a vid from up thread but this thread has too many pages for me to look for it, 😂. Were I to order a savory dish and worry about it being “pixelated” I’d just tell the server “no glitter” when I order and end the concern right there.

For fun, I crunched some numbers to see if the Cake Bake Shop will cost much more than some other places I go for a long lunch with a drink or two. I usually do this a couple of times a trip when lunch is my main meal of the day.

For comps I used themed places that offer a good quality sandwich & side or a couple of small plates that can make a full meal. They are all a little unique, have upscale cocktails, and offer an opportunity to relax and linger, either in the restaurant or somewhere nearby. For me that would be Nomad Lounge, Hollywood Brown Derby Lounge or restaurant, and Kona Cafe (not so upscale, but linger-worthy if you count getting a cocktail to go and sitting on the beach). Prices quoted are what I typically order at those places.

Nomad Lounge:
Bread Service - $18, Chicken Satay - $14, Snow Leopard Salvation - $17 x 2. Add 20% tip. TOTAL: $79.20

HBD Lounge or restaurant:
Stone Fruit Burrata - $14, Escargot - $19, Pomegranate Martini - 15.50 x 2. Add 20% tip. TOTAL: $76.80

Kona Cafe:
Crispy Pork Vegetable Pot Stickers - $13, Hamachi Tuna Roll - $21, Polynesian Mai Tai - $16 x 2. Add 20% tip. TOTAL: $79.20.

Cake Bake Shop:
I would probably order: Chicken Salade Croissant (comes with a salad) OR Pick Two (Cup of soup and half a sandwich) - both are $26. Bellini - $23 x 2. Add 20% tip. TOTAL: $86.40

So yeah, apples to apples there is a premium of $7 or about 9% for Cake Bake. The food prices are similar, but the cocktails are pricier.

Keep in mind that Nomad and HBD Lounges are consistently busy and hard to get into despite the prices. Even more so are Space 220 or Trader Sam’s if you’re counting unique experiences in the high price range. Cake Bake with its immersive theming and focus on specialty desserts and beverages will probably slot into to this segment, especially appealing to women, and will also overlap into the family segment who is willing to splurge on vacation (and cake!). Even if that’s a minority of Disney guests, it’s still a formidable segment. Cake Bake may do just fine.

Dumb and very honest curiosity… what is the 2 hour dining experience? What exactly happens? If someone can give a low down from being seated to served etc.

I understand the point you are making, but your picks are anything but apples to apples. You picked oddly expensive (escargot? Tuna sushi?) and random items at some places, or items that are very substantial and comparing them to half a croissant and a cup of soup and saying “see, not bad!” Maybe in your perfect circumstances where most of what you eat is in liquid and appetizer form, but I don’t see it working out that way for most.

A glass of milk is 8 dollars. A Pepsi is 8 dollars. Do some real apples to apples, compare a salad, non liquid courage beverage, a kids meal, etc.

Maybe I'm just misunderstanding, but your comparison is 2 small plates and 2 drinks for every other place, but only 1 plate and 2 drinks at Cake Bake? I personally would not consider pot stickers and a tuna roll to be the same amount of food as a cup of soup and a half sandwich. Not to mention that it's a soup and half sandwich - by comparison that sounds extremely mundane, but yet more expensive.

That doesn't seem like apples to apples.

I started typing before you posted, then got distracted and didn't post mine until after you, so sorry to rehash your point.

But I agree completely.

I’m comparing what I actually order at those different restaurants to make a full meal and not a snack.

The sandwich options at Cake Bake include a nice-sized sandwich and a good portion of arugula salad, and are a full two-course meal. The Pick Two is a full meal too, at least for me. Even though it’s one plate, it’s two courses, and a comparable amount of food to two small plates at Nomad and HBD, which are more like snacks than meals. So to me those are all apples to apples.

I agree that the Kona example is more food because their small plates are a little bigger. But that’s what I always order there because I like them better it their entrees, and one sushi roll or plate or dumplings is not quite enough. Keep in mind that the restaurant itself and its atmosphere (noisy cafe in an hotel lobby) isn’t in the same league as Nomad, HBD or Cake Bake, so that is the trade off. I did hesitate at including Kona because of that, but the specialty drinks are really unique and good, as is the ability to relax on the beach with a Mai-tai after lunch. But the other restaurants are still in a different category than Kona, so you are right that they probably are not the best comparables.

We are making different points.

You are absolutely right that there are plenty of places that offer superior value when considering at the amount of food and drink you get for the money. Cake Bake is a horrible value by those metrics. I completely agree with you!

However the examples I gave are not random. They are exactly what I ordered the last time I went to all those places. Yes I ordered tuna sushi and escargot (not at the same place, lol.) I can tell you that those places are always chocked full of people eating and drinking exactly the same way I do - not looking for large amounts of food and sodas, but wanting unique small plates and drinks, good service and a quality experience. Yes, what they are eating and drinking is a horrible value for the amount of food you get. But there are still lines to get in, and those lines are often closed because of demand. If Cake Bake can offer a similar experience at a similar or slightly higher price, be it small plates or sandwiches or special desserts or whatnot, there are people who will want it.

What a lot of people are not getting is that Cake Bake is not a Red Robin. It’s more like a signature restaurant in most respects, but one that serves breakfast, sandwiches and cake in addition to apps and entrees. It’s not really meant to be a good value, it’s more about the experience. You are right that a lot of people, maybe most, won’t go there, and for very good reasons of value. But that does not mean there is not a market for that type of restaurant.

Lunch at space 220 is $55, I think without a drink. Almost no availability for.a party of 2, at lunch time( 12-4)

Overpriced restaurants can be successful, even restaurants with a reputation for mediocre food.

Edited to add kids meal at space is $29.

I just the saw the menu with the prices. It's the $18 kid's buttered noodles for me. Uproar valid. Carry on. 😂

I think we all know the "Disney Tax" exists due to a certain Disney clientele. It wouldn't be a surprise to see a large family splitting one slice of cake or one of those $18 kid noodles. Keep behaving like that and the restaurant will become prix fixe in no time. Remember Be Our Guest?

Ya, that could happen. One slice between five people.
