Cake and Dessert Party

To save money my DF and I were thinking of just ordering a cake to cut at the reception, because we are having a dessert party after. We also don't want people to fill up at the reception and eat nothing at the dessert party, which we also have an expensive menu for.

I was wondering what other couples experiences have been? Has anyone had cake and dessert party and everyone ate? Or is it better to do one or the other?

Thanks!

I still have a lot of stuff to find out from our coordinator. But when we did our site visits he told us that we didn't have to stick to the menus and that we could do anything in place of it as long as were were spending the minimum. Ideally we want to have a huge candy bar in place of a dessert bar and also serve wedding cake at the DP (I know there are a ton of restrictions). So all in all we were planning to skip dessert completely at dinner b/c we figured that everyone would just move outside and onto the next course at the DP.
