Which excursion were you on? We have a beach break booked for Cabo too:scared1:

When is your cruise? We recently had all beach excursions cancelled at another stop on the Mexican Riviera....no explanation, but I have a feeling there might be an overabundance of jellyfish lately.
Or it could be that your excursion was changed to one that is for adults only. A few of the resorts that allow cruise passengers have that rule.

Did you look to see if there are any other beach excursions?

You can VERY easily take a taxi (I wouldn't recommend a water taxi with a small child) to almost any location on Medano Beach and stay for the day. There are many bars and restaurants that will let you use their beach chairs, umbrellas, etc for the day, if you buy drinks or lunch.
It's very safe, lots of other cruise passengers and American & Canadian tourists....just watch the time you need to return according to the cruise ship, do not ask a local.

We are on the 2/13 MR and I just checked and the beach break shows unavailable. It was there yesterday:confused:

Thanks everyone.

Not sure WHY the excursion was cancelled, the phone message did not elaborate as to why. The one that we were scheduled to do was:
Cabo Beach Break

There are 2 other "beach" type excursions, but one of the two, you cannot enter the ocean b/c of the strong current. I guess we were just hoping for a "beach" day, 4 hours of just enjoying the beach and the ocean. The other one would be $200 for us to spent 4 hours at the beach. Just seems RIDICULOUS to me? Am I crazy?

Is it common to just ask a taxi to take you to the beach? Are the "public" beaches nearby accessible with chairs/huts/etc - and are there locals bothering you every second of your "beach break?"

Medano Beach is the long stretch of beach that you'll see directly to the right of the bay where the ship's tenders take you to the docks. It's pretty much the ONLY beach. Lover's Beach is where the famous "Arch" is, but it isn't really suitable for "beaching" although some people do it. You can ONLY get to Lover's Beach via water taxi and because of the waves there, it's really, really hard to get back into the water taxi.

On Medano Beach, (it's very common to just get a taxi) it is almost completely open to the public. Some of the hotels will have some roped-off areas for their own guests with chairs, but you could still park yourself in front of their roped off areas. Yes, there will be vendors, but all you need to do is say "No thank you".
The waves ARE pretty rough most of the time, but you and the kids can still sit on the beach and play right at the edge...and sometimes it's easy to get in and get wet, it really just depends.

Try doing a Google search for something like "Cabo San Lucas Medano Beach" or "Cabo San Lucas Beach Hotels", and you'll find a map of the beach and maybe be able to pick a spot ahead of time.

I'd have to respectfully disagree with this -- with a 5 year old, I think a water taxi is just fine. A regular taxi would require a car seat, and driving in Mexico can be, umm...adventurous -- many times the seat belts aren't there or aren't working properly. Taking a car to Medano Beach is a very convoluted way to get there. With kids 3 and under, maybe a water taxi might not be advisable. Depends upon the child, too. YMMV.

We are in Cabo right now staying in a timeshare at Punta Ballena, where we get an unobstructed view of the cruise ships and the arch. The water is very rough, maybe too rough for a young child, even at Medano Beach. It is also very cold, for those of you used to CC and the Caribbean. It is very easy to take a taxi to Medano Beach. Just tell the driver that you want to go to Tabascos and he can drop you off. Just walk down to the beach. You can use the chairs and umbrellas at Tabascos as long as you order something to eat and drink. You can go to any of the beach bars and get the same deal. The reason I mention Tabascos is that it is less rowdy than some of the others, i.e. Mangos. You can take the taxi back, there are many waiting on the street side the hotels that line the beach. You can also take a water taxi. Both options are about $10. The water taxi is difficult to get back into from the beach side. You can always lift up the kids to the boat driver. Some of the hotels and timeshares offer a day pass, but they run about $75 for adults and half for kids. Food, drink and facility use are included. You can google Cabo, Cabo marina or Medano Beach hotels and email them. Hope that helps.

Puerto Vallarta beaches are much nicer. Nice sand, calmer waters. You can easily do a beach day there. The Crowne Paradise and Krystal are located within walking distance to the dock. Check out cruisecritic.com. There are several threads about beach days.

I've seen the pictures of water taxis, about 3 dollars pp...I think it'd be fine with a five year old...as long as you have two adults...one climbs out in calf-knee deep water and carries the 5 year old to the beach..no problem..we're planning on doing this in Cabo for sure! :)

Whether or not you will be able to go in the water will be dependant on the weather. We were there in January and the waves breaking on Medano Beach were a bit too much for us to swim in most days. Some days it was actually relatively calm. If it were me I would get off the tender, get on a water taxi and go over to Medano Beach and park myself near Tabascos. If you want really good info on Cabo in general head over to Trip Advisor's Cabo Forums, the people there really know their stuff.
