Cable ties on luggage?

On my last trip to Disney my luggage was delivered very late to my room. When I got back at midnight I had to call for my luggage it arrived about 1/2 an hour later. I checked in at noon and went to the park. When I got my luggage I realizeda cable tie was holding the zipper so I couldnt get it open and my siccors were inside of the luggage. Well after about an hour I finally broke the tie with my house key which was in my purse. There was a note in my luggage that said they had searched my luggage. I did not have a lock on my stuff so I was purturbed that they put the cable ties on.
There was also no why they would have come open I never lock my luggage.
When it came time to fly home I shipped a great big box home for 20.00 and was spared dragging all my stuff on the plane. Next time I will put the nail clipper in the outside zipper pocket lol

On my recent trip to CA (last month) I just tied a good knot with ribbon. My bags were not opened.

Luggage straps are fine for identifying luggage but they will not let you know if your bags have been tampered with. The same thing goes for the reusable zip ties. If they can be undone you have no idea if someone has been through your luggage.

I am sticking with my zip ties.

Also another good tip if you are travelling with hard sided luggage is to get strapping tape (the tape that looks like it has string in it) to hold your luggage closed in place of zip ties on soft sided luggage. This will help prevent bag pilfering since you are no longer supposed to use luggage locks. And it also prevents your luggage from accidental openings.

I do not lock my luggage, I do not use zip ties (found at any computer accesorie dept. anywhere), I leave it unlocked (my attitude, take it, don't break it). I have had my luggage inspected twice and there was a little notice of the inspection in the bag. Nothing was missing, nothing was out of place ( I never would have known except for the notice). I do not overpack, hence I need nothing to hold it close, I don't do anything wrong, hence no need for anything to conceal anything.
luggage locks are a joke, anyone can open them in about 2 seconds.
Perhaps I am too trusting, but, I don't leave anything of value in my checked luggage, anything of value is sent ahead or carried on.

And if you think that cable ties will stop someone from going into your bag YOU ARE MISTAKEN :( , a nice 25 cents pen can open a zipper in 3.5 seconds

I don't leave anything of value in my checked luggage

You have a good point there, Gail. I don't know why I have always locked my luggage because I don't keep anything of value in there either. Everything that is valuable I take with me on the plane (camera, money, jewelry, etc...) I don't think that I am going to lock my luggage this time either. The only reason that I can think of for me locking my luggage is to make sure that the zippers don't come open. And for that I can use a twist tie.

Just got back last night. TSA will cut off anything-locks, cable ties, or twist ties. We used cable ties just to keep our luggage zippers closed. They did go into one bag, left it a complete mess but nothing was missing. We also put all valuables and souvenirs in our carry ons, which they opened and thoroughly inspect as well on the way down but not back from MCO.

I have a few suggestions for making sure your luggage is NOT a mess after the TSA search. Use zip lock bags and/or packing cubes. Keep everything VERY organized. Do not stuff things in every spare nook. Keep in mind these guys do this in just a few minutes. If in order to re-pack they need to figure out a jigsaw puzzle, you odds are slim that they will. I use the Eagle Creek packing cubes and things have gone great!

We had orange cable ties on our bags coming and going they were not disturbed. So I guess our bags were not opened. Everything seemed to be the way we packed them.

Ours were blue and were replaced by white/clear ones. Inside our suitcase was an"official" notice from the TSA informing us that our bag had been opened and searched. (which was quite evident by the condition they left it in).
