cabin upgrades

Hi!
I am in the middle of planning our 4 day cruise for next August and have been reading a lot on this board; thank you to all for such great tips, advice etc. My question is, how does Disney decide who to give upgrades to? Is there any rhyme or reason or is it just assigned randomly? We have booked a cat 4 family room (which I am very excited about) but I would be beside myself if we ever got upgraded from there! Any input would be appreciated! Thanks!!!

As far as I've read it's totally random, but from what they say the further in advance you book the better your chances because upgrades occur when a catagory sells out & they want to open up more rooms. We just got an upgrade for the 5/13 sailing, if you check online it says that it's sold out! Good luck, but I am SURE you'll love the cat 4!!!

Thanks for your input; if in fact it is based on booking far in advance, I may be in luck; we just booked last week for 8/2005 so maybe I'll get lucky!!!

This morning saw a post where someone did get upgraded from a cat 4 to a cat 3.

We originally planned to sail in April 2002, but due to economic reasons, we pushed it back to 2003 and again to 2004. We received a phone call last Thursday saying that they wanted to upgrade us from a Cat 4 to a Cat 3. We were very surprised. The woman (San) from DCL stated to me that we were given this opportunity due to the time when we booked. We were very happy about a cat 4 room, but are ecstatic over the fact of being upgraded to a cat 3.

Just keep hoping.

If we booked through a TA, can we still get upgraded?

I booked through an online TA (expedia) and was told that it is absolutely random and could depend on numerious things (how many people you have in your room, etc)
They also said that they allow agencies like theirs (being a larger customer of disneys) so many upgrades and there really is no method to their madness.
I ended up finding out yesterday I was upgraded from a cat 11 to cat 9 so I guess I was one of the random lucky ones--not usually lucky...
