We booked an ocean view room on the September 2021 British Isles Cruise on opening day. Now thinking, maybe we should upgrade to a Verandah room. I know it's a port intensive cruise and we've sailed both rooms, any opinions?

Depends on the difference in price and whether you can fit that difference into your budget.

If the increased cost will mean you’ll have to penny pinch during your vacation, then I’d say stay with the oceanview. You’ll still get to enjoy the scenery of the ports from the comfort/privacy of your room. We did inside rooms on our Alaska cruise (which was rather expensive because of the size of our party) and didn’t feel like we were missing out too much.

If you already have some breathing room in the budget, then I’d say that the verandah is usually worth the extra expense (for me, at least). We’ve done verandahs on our less-expensive cruises and enjoyed the freedom to go out and sip wine/coffee with fresh air and the sounds of the ocean/sunrise/sunset as a backdrop.

I agree it is a really price-dependent question. I've noticed that for our family of 5, some cruises seem to have only a small difference (e.g. $100 per night) between OV and verandah, whereas for other cruises, it's more like $500-1,000 per night extra.

I think Sept. 2021 is far enough out I wouldn't be too worried about quarantining, so wouldn't worry about needing a verandah for that reason. But I do generally like having a verandah--we often wake up much earlier than the ship breakfast/activities begin so it is nice to have a place to sit, read a book, and watch the ocean. And the fresh air can be very welcome sometimes. Still, that value is probably in the neighborhood of something I'd pay $100-200 more per night for, not something I'd pay a massive amount for.

What is the view supposed to be like? For our Alaska cruise, it was important for us to have a verandah, because there was something gorgeous to see every minute, and our verandah optimized that for us in a way that a window would not have. I've never been to the British Isles, but if they're supposed to be breathtaking, I would upgrade. And if you do upgrade & money is a concern, any type of verandah is okay imo, even a navigators. It's not having the plexiglass railing & perfect unobstructed view from inside your stateroom that counts so much (although that's nice) as just being able to go out on the verandah, see outside, breathe the fresh air & feel part of that environment, with no glass in the way.

Thanks for your words of wisdom. I think we can use the extra $1000 in a better way and will keep our oceanview room.
