Cabin Fever in Atlanta

The way it's looking, we probably won't have school all week. Forsyth County has already closed on Friday. The kids are even getting tired of playing in the snow. I'm guessing it will be another week before it melts in the yards. I'm hoping the roads clear up by Saturday! Anyone know what GA20 in Cumming is like?

This Forsyth County School thing has me REALLY concerned!!! My DW is a teacher at Forsyth Central HS, and we're scheduled to take a bus load of students down to Disney next month to spend the weekend and do the YES program. It's all booked and paid for.

AND, my family is scheduled to leave on our first trip as DVC members on the day teachers WERE schedule to be done for the year.

I'm concerned the makeup days could impact either or both of these plans!

Forsyth resident here. School is open Tuesday! An entire week of no school and MLK day thrown in for good measure! I haven't left the house since Saturday but I'm planning on going out today.

Problem is the ice, no plows or sanding equipment. There are no plows to plow the school parking lots. Stores are open for limited hours and the supply trucks haven't been able to get in to restock. Major interstates are closed due to ice.

I'm also from the North and this is the craziest thing ever! As others have said, you really can't go out, everything is frozen and then the temps are so cold (for the south) most people don't even own boots and heavy gloves and coats. So being outside for long periods of time is no fun.

Luckily this kind of weather only comes along every 10 years or so! We are all ready to kill each other, but what can you do?

I live on GA20 (between 400 and Gwinnett County). It's OK. It looks like they ran a plow down it early yesterday, so it's actually had a chance to dry out in most places. Just BE CAREFUL. The icy spots can jump up out of nowhere and get you.

Thanks! We live in Sugar Hill and wanted to venture out to Target but weren't sure what GA20 looked like. The side roads by us are still a icy but we were hoping the major roads would be better.

This is the point I wanted to make. When i was growing up in Virginia, we had boots, wool snowsuits, multiple pairs of gloves, scarves and hats. We could go out and play for 2 hours, come in and change into our next set of winter clothes and go right back out there in it. Here in Atlanta, I own one pair of driving gloves and a winter jacket.In fact, I donated my warm coat in the fall because I had had it for 18 years. When you only wear something 6 times a year, it lasts durn near forever but it's hopelessly out of style. DD17 owns one pair of gloves, one felt hat and a jacket. Christian owns only a jacket. If the kids go outside, they wear jeans and tennis shoes. Even a little bit of play results in soaking wet feet and frostbitten hands. It's not enjoyable at all. And it doesn't make sense to buy (and store) all this heavy-duty gear because we only get an event like this every 10-15 years.And you probably couldn't even find this stuff unless you ordered it online. The last time I can remenber being iced in like this, I was carrying DD17!

Campus opened today at 11am. It was a cluster and a half, took many people 40 minutes to do the last mile or two coming off the highway. However, I think much of this was due to the fact that everyone was trying to come in at the same time, not just the roads. The roads around campus were much better at 2:30 when I left, but there's still lots of ice, especially if the road is blocked from the sun by trees. 316 isn't great from what I understand, but it's doable if you're careful and budget extra time. The person I talked to said it was ok until Winder, then Winder - Athens is where it was the worst.

If you google Athens Banner-Herald, one of the articles on the front page talks about the problem roads and areas where things are closed or not safe.

Just announced....no school again. This makes it 10 days off in a row including the weekends/holiday.

I heard on the radio this morning the entire city of Atlanta has only 9 snowplows for the entire city. Massport owns 50 snowplows for Logan Airport alone! The last time I can recall being snowed in for days was the Blizzard of 78. We get bigger storms than you do (and lots of them) but we have the equipment to clear the snow away and sand the streets to melt the ice. Plus, we have more opportunity to learn how to drive in this weather. I came to work today with 8-10 inches of snow on the ground and things were just getting going. I have no idea how much is out there now. I am accustomed to driving in the snow, though, and I have a 4 wheel drive vehicle so it doesn't even phase me. Like Golfgal said, go out and have fun and go sledding in it!

I think this pretty much sums up the difference in Northern vs Southern snow. "The" truck they use to grate our county (as in apparently the ONLY one LOL) drove into a ditch and had to be towed out. He wasn't hurt so we didn't feel bad having a chuckle about it. DH works up North and, of course, nothing really shuts down there. We got 4 or 5 inches of snow and a few icy roads. We're out of school all week I'll take this stuff ANY time Of course, the added benefit is, if our ground is frozen, it is killing all the nasty bugs and such so we have less of them in the Summer. People forget that when they want these "mild" winters.

We're about 100 miles south of Atlanta and everything has cleared here, but DH wanted to head to Atlanta on Saturday afternoon to get away, there is no way on earth I would head up there after seeing some pictures from the news, we will wait a couple of weeks until he has another Saturday off.

I have been shut in the house almost everyday since New years Eve with bronchitis and I am ready about to pull out my hair, but I am not risking my life for a little fun. Dh is used to that kind of weather becauee he is from Illinois, but he scares me when he drives anyway and it would be getting dark as we headed out, NO WAY!
