Cabin and golf cart questions

Are the cabins scattered about or clustered together? If they're grouped in clusters, where do I find them on the map? Can you drive right up to your cabin or do you have to park up at the front like you do for the Hoop Dee Doo?

Is a golf cart faster than the bus? I've been reading the FAQ and see that they're $250 a week. That's more than some cars! There must be a reason that people are paying all that money. Is it just to get to and from the restaurant and pool?

I'm thinking if the cart is just to get to/from the restaurant, I can eat in the cabin and save the $250. But maybe I'm missing something.

I wasn't thinking about having to pay an extra $250 to not have to be on the bus all the time. This would be like renting a second car.

$250 is just an awful lot of dough for a little cart, IMO.

The cabins are all clustered together on loops 2100-2800. As far as whether or not a cart is necessary, and whether or not it is worth the price, there are several threads that discuss these topics. You can find links to some of these in the FAQ sticky right at the top of this page.

To specifically answer your question about driving to the restaurant (Trails End) yes, you can drive a golf cart there, and park it in a golf cart parking area which is just steps from the restaurant. You cannot park a car here. And, yes, you can park your cart (as well as your car) right outside your cabin (there is even an electric outlet so you can charge your cart).

This map will show you the cabin layout and distance from Settlement area.

We user a cart to get to/from the Settlement/marina area (also where Trails End restaurant is) and to the front Outpost area to catch the buses to the parks. We could do this on a bus too, but the cart is more fun.

We also use it just to go "looping" - basically the golf cart version of cruising - a particularly fun activity during the holidays when campers go all out decorating their sites. :santa:

Thanks so much. I really appreciate the help.

It still sounds a little crazy to me to pay as much for a golf cart as I will for a car, but I guess...maybe...I could. I think. ;)

Thanks again. :)

A cart is also convenient for running to the trading posts, the pools, the beach, etc. You will see hundreds of carts there, many Disney rentals, some outside rentals, many privately owned and often decorated or modified. Lots of fun. We rented a few times then bought our own.

We stayed in the cabins a few weeks ago and we weren't planning on spending the money on a golf cart before we got there. We spent our first day at the Fort so we rented one that day to check it out (it was our first time there), to go to the pool, and to Mickey's Backyard BBQ. We also rented one on the two days we went to Magic Kingdom. It was a lot more convenient for us than taking the bus back and forth because we came back to the room for a nap then back to MK in the evenings. On the days that we went to the other parks we didn't rent one because we drove our own car. We actually only took the bus the night we arrived. I think we saved a lot of time since we didn't have to walk to the bus stop every time we went out and we didn't have to wait for the bus to show up. Since we weren't there at a busy time we didn't have to worry about them not having carts available.

What did you think of the cabin experience overall? We're considering staying at a FW cabin for our next trip. We have 2 young children and like the idea of having a separate bedroom so that my wife and I can put them to bed at their usual bedtime and she and I can stay up later in the living room. In addition, the FW cabin appeals to me because (a) it is cheaper than renting a DVC unit and (b) it looks like it would be fun to do some BBQ-ing and go to the petting zoo, Hoop-De-Do review, etc....

Sorry, one more question: what was the cost per day to rent the golf cart? Thanks!

Zuperdaave,

The Fort cabins would be good for all the reasons you gave. They're good if you want a relaxing vacation and will spend some time at the Fort during the day. If you are a 24x7 theme park warrior, then the cabins probably won't benefit you. We liked being able to sit out on the deck of the cabin at night, cook out on the grill, and go over to the nightly campfire and sing-along. I highly recommend you try the cabins.

PS-the Disney carts rent for close to $60 a day. Off-site rentals have a weekly rate that average about $32 a day.

Bama ED and lauraebeth, thank you very much for the info! Will definitely help with the decision process...
