You can rent them for half the day now. Also if you get there early enough you can get a shaded spot almost anywhere you like. We bring coolers full off food/snacks, beverages (Adult-no glass or kids) & so on. If you plan ahead your day can be just as good or even better than having a shack for much cheaper.

I just reserved one for september and they made no mention of the half day thing... are you talking about the beachcomber shacks or the umbrellas? Or both? Is the 1/2 day for reserve ahead, or only when you are there/day of?
