Cab from John Wayne

We have someone joining us for our trip in the middle of our week. It is a friend's mom and she is not familiar with flying or being in situations far from home. She doesn't have, and doesn't understand how to use, the Uber or Lyft app. We booked her to John Wayne and she will have no issues asking airport staff how to get to get shuttle/ cab area. I am thinking one of us will need to Uber to the airport and pick her up and then Uber back. The only other thing would be telling her to find a cab, are there still cabs waiting or is it mainly Uber/Lyfts and shuttles?

Cabs are right across the pick up lane/street from the baggage claim exit at John Wayne. There will be employees of the airport that can show her. It is super close and easy. Then she just needs to make sure she confirms with the driver that they are honoring the flat rate and that they take credit cards (if that is how she wants to pay) before she enters the cab.

Agree with the PP that getting to the taxi area at SNA is very, very easy. It's right across the street from the baggage claim area and there are many signs.

Agree. For reference the last couple times we did Uber/Lyft from John Wayne to DL area hotels it was around $30-35 one way. Cab quote shouldn't be too much more than that.

Thanks all! This will make things so much easier.
I most always fly into SNA for a trip to DLR. I tried uber once and it didn't go well for me. I prefer to just walk out to the taxi area for a ride. I ask for flat rate to my hotel and I prefer to pay cash.

There have been times when there was a bit of a language challenge for me and the driver. So I started typing out where I want them to take me. Name of hotel along with the address. If I was comfortable with the ride, I get the driver's contact info for a return trip to SNA at the end of my trip.

Grabbing a taxi is so easy at SNA.

I guess I'm just too tired today. I did have a fun friend trip to the wine country last weekend, which may explain what I'm about to admit. I looked at the title of this post and thought maybe there was a John Wayne winery somewhere nearby. When I read Cab, I wasn't thinking about a taxi.

Haha! A John Wayne winery near DL would be wonderful.

😁

I just checked, and the Disney family sold their Napa winery last year...

How about Fess Parker's winery? I think they serve some of those at DL.

(Sorry, kikismom, I know we're hijacking your thread...)

The Fess Parker winery is very lovely and the wines are good. Also plenty of other wineries close to it , I highly recommend a visit.

We did a cab on arrival from SNA on Aug 23rd- lots of them waiting, and price wasn't much more than Lyft and we were happy with the driver/car.

You can also order her a Lyft/Uber from the app. It'll ask you who's riding. It'll be billed to your account. She won't have to deal with paying or tipping. I've done that for my dad before and it made it really easy for him.

Cabs are easier to find at SNA, though. For Lyft we had to go to a special designated area over in the parking garage. And we’ve had the ride-share drivers not be able to find the designated area (as have others waiting for drivers, based on what we overheard). We had one driver cancel the ride outright after we’d been waiting @15 minutes. It sounds like the mom couldn’t handle any such complications.

Our frustrations with ride-share there is what caused us to start pre-arranging transfers.

If she is that unfamiliar with travel, SNA is so close that you should hop in an Uber, meet her at baggage claim, and Uber back with her. She will be very happy to see a familiar face to guide her through the process.

The plural of anecdote is not data. I wouldn’t dismiss it because it happened once. Ride-share drivers know where designated pick-up spots are at major airports.

You would think so, wouldn’t you? But it happened twice to us (then we gave up on ride-share from SNA). The first time the driver cancelled the ride outright, and we had to rebook. The second time (a different trip) the driver took a long time to find the designated area and said he had never been there before. And both times others around us also were having trouble getting their rides.

I just wanted to mention that ride-share at SNA isn’t always as straightforward as one might think.

if this lady is anything like my mom she cant handle anything app based...the whole idea of uber is foreign to her

That is what will most likely happen. I'm leaving it up to my friend. She's never been to SNA, were used to way larger airports so once she gets there she may feel more comfortable having her hop in a cab. That's also our day we'll let all the kids sleep in and her flight gets in around 9:30. We may go and be back before the teens wake up.

Yep. Any complications would be terrible.
