My father has just found out he will have Quadruple bypass surgery this Thursday. His entire life he has been an oatmeal ,whole grain, fruit and veggie kinda fellow. He is the same weight at 72 that he was at 25 when he was in the military. So this is a surprise to the whole family :scared1:

We have a family trip scheduled for September 15-22 just over 6 weeks from surgery. He has been looking forward to this vacation for months, especially since it will be the last with the grandkids since my DD will be off to college next year.

I think he should cancel the trip and rest, but he thinks he can do this. Does anyone have any experience doing WDW after such a major surgery?

My 74 y/o uncle had triple bypass surgery in January and then went to Disney with his grandchildren in March. We were all worried that he shouldn't go and the recuperation in the early stages was a bit rough, but he did get the OK from his doctor. He went, took it as easy as he could, and had a wonderful time.

I think it really depends on what the doctor says.

My DH had this surgery in late Feb. he's a few years younger then your Dad. At 6 weeks, he should fine to go, but check with the Doctor first. It will be a different kind of trip, I would suggest shows and just about no rides and if he feels the need rent a wheelchair.

It really depends on how the surgery goes and what the doctor says. He should be fine and hopefully there are no complications.

Most people (regardless of age) are out after three days - my dh had his at the age of 48 and was in the hospital 10 days (complications). Good luck and hope it all works out. I know my husband would not have been ready after six weeks but each person is different.

Let us know how he is doing regardless.

If you father is really looking forward to this trip and the Dr gives the okay, maybe he can go and have a different kind of vacation. Being at the resorts, having meals with the family, just enjoying time with the family, enjoying the Disney magic. My husband had his heart attack at age 48 while at WDW, and afterwards, while he was waiting for an okay to fly home after his stent, all he wanted was to just BE there, enjoying sights and sounds. Prayers all goes well and he's back to feeling good real soon.

Thank you all for your feedback!

Dad is doing Great!!!!!:cool1::cool1::cool1::cool1:

He had surgery last Thursday and was out of ICU on Friday. Up walking around and being "dad".

He did decided to cancel the WDW vacation for September :sad1:

As much as I dislike the idea of going without him,(our airfare is non-refundable) I know he wouldn't be happy unless he could do Disney the way he has always done Disney.... Tower of Terror, Rocking Roller and all.... so next year we will plan again to go as a family.:grouphug:

Happy to hear he is doing well.

He probably could have gone - I just found out someone I know - her bil had a bypass and a month later went in for surgery again. You really never know. Disney is always there. I hope you all go together sooner than later.

Wishing him the best.
