Bye, all - Final UPDATE original post

[Boston Tea Party]

I've gone through my things and tried to decide what is most important. I have a large pile on the kitchen table consisting of pictures and momentos such as the flag from my father's coffin and my grandfather's cowboy hat. I cried as I decided what to leave behind.

My daughter, 11, is quite frightened but my son, 4, is oblivious at this time. He has pneumonia and is ill but on the mend.

The sounds of hammering and sawing punctuate the eery stillness.

I don't know what else to say, other than I am scared to death of this monster. I fully expect to come home to nothing. The evacuation we are about to start, ironically the route I just drove to meet Mrs. Kreamer and deliver her relief supplies, usually takes 4 hours. I am hearing it will take 24.

Time to hit the road.

Please pray for all of us who will be affected by Rita.

UPDATE:

Thank you all for the kind words. We arrived here at my aunt's at 7:30 on Thursday night. We left Houston Wednesday night at 10 PM. It is unbelievable out there.

FINAL UPDATE:

With the truck loaded with extra gas, water, food and a pistol, we returned home today. I left my other car, because I was not sure what the day would hold. The place we went is supposed to get lots of rain and consequently flood.

We decided to head west at daybreak to try and beat this thing.

We were successful and all is well here.

About two years ago there was a fire near my home and after I grabbed everything of emotional value I took pictures of the rest of my house and possessions. Not to sound negative, but I thought that at least I would have photos of my stuff for insurance purposes....just a thought. Good luck and I will pray your family is safe. I remember that you were one of the people helping a Katrina family and you met them at a store to give them supplies....goodness makes a circle so if you need help let us know and we can do what we can...stay safe.

24 hours on the road with a sick child! Oh my, that is terrible by itself without the fear of what might happen to your home. If there is anything you need after this is over get online and tell us right away. I would pack everything that would fit into the car and Drive Safely and Quickly as possible away!

Your post has literally brought tears to my eyes.. I don't know how much more of this human pain and suffering I can watch.. My heart goes out to everyone and I just feel so damn helpless!

Give your kids a big hug and a kiss from me and tell them it's going to be okay.. At least by leaving, you'll be safe and won't become separated..
