BWV Standard Studio vs. Preferred

We are BLT owners who just returned from our first stay at BWV. We loved it!

We paid points for a "standard" studio, but according to our check out papers, we were upgraded to a water view. We were on the very end of the resort looking at a quiet pool and the river with a nice view of the Swan and Dolphin. I confirmed with a cast member that this was a preferred room.

So I have a few questions:

*What are the "standard view" rooms?
*What most likely happened to be upgraded? How common is that?

Thanks.

Buck

Upgrading does not happen often and will not happen upon request.

If you could see quiet pool from room you had a preferred view. If you walked out the door of your room and walked down the hall to the elevator, every room on your right as you walked toward the elevator was standard view and every one to your left was preferred. In fact, that particular walk took you past all the standard views available on whatever floor you were on. They face the front of the resort and the side that looks toward parking lot and towards Studios. See photo map on this page: http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1801651

Just a suggestion, make sure you check your current points and you weren't charged for the upgraded view.
We were upgraded at BLT and were charged for it unknowingly.

I hope it was a nice free surprise upgrade for you! :)

I suspect "view" upgrades are far more likely to happen than room size upgrades. But no, they don't happen often and they won't happen off a request.

Sometimes DOWNGRADES happen as well. Two fiasco's I remember was the "Great OKW Grand Villa loss to PGA golfers" and "oops, sorry, we are going to move you all out of those VAKL conceriege rooms because we need them for maintenance."

I wonder if the upgrade had anything to do with the fact that it was our first stay at BWV. We certainly didn't expect it, and frankly, because we were new to BWV, I didn't even have an inkling that it was something other than a standard view until Day 3.

It was probably just luck. I don't think they have information on if it's your first stay. Most likely a standard view room went out of service.

When it happens it usually means there is no standard room available because they either overbooked or some room has gone out of service.

Rest assured that DVD is very democrat about its treatment of members: all DVC members are mistreated equally. Thus, it is unlikely you were upgraded because you were new to BWV

definitely go look at your points and see if this happened to you.

even if Disney changed your room - sometimes the points are charged for an upgrade.

they should do this if you requested it - but if they moved you - then definitely complaint to MS.

Here's a color key map of BWV showing the various room view categories. As you can see, you were definitely upgraded.

As others have indicated, your upgrade was just luck of the draw. No way to "improve your chances" in the future for the same kind of thing. Glad you had a great stay. :)
