BUZZARDS AT AK

When we did AK in dec,there were hundreds of big black ugly buzzards or vultures. They weren't there in may or the previous dec. Anybody know where they came from ? The driver/tour guide never once mentioned them as she pointed out the various animals,acted as if she never saw them.
