Our story:

June 15th, 2001

Today, at wake up, mixed feelings were running through my head. I was excited about touring MGM, since we had only spent an evening there, but it was also our last full day. Reality was starting to set in that tomorrow we would be going home. But, I quickly brushed all negative thoughts aside and tried to make the most of the day. Buzz was up and going at 8, and we made it to the bus stop by 9. After a 5 minute wait, we were on our way to the Studios.

The first thing we headed for when we entered the park was RnR and ToT. Of course, everyone else was already in this section of the park, and the lines were quite long. We grabbed FPs for RnR, and vowed to come back to ToT later in the day when the lines decreased. I decided to hit the Animation Tour, because I had really enjoyed this in 1996.

We waited about 10 minutes for the tour to start. Suprisingly, not many people were in line. This had been a favorite from the 1996 trip, and I knew Buzz would enjoy it. I didn’t really tell him what it was though, and when the lady said it would take 40 minutes, he started getting a little anxious about what I was dragging him into. I think the movie at the beginning really helped calm his fears and help him enjoy the experience. The movie is pretty old (the same one from 96), but still quite funny. The sketch artist drew Mickey (of course) and Milo from Atlantis, as well as showing us a clip from the new movie. The animators were working on a film called Lilo and Stitch, which should be released sometime next year. This will be the second movie (Mulan was the first), completely done in the Florida studios. We both really enjoyed this tour; it was definitely a favorite for the day.

After the Animation Tour, we used our FPs for RnR and had about a 10 minute wait. It would have been shorter, but they were having some technical difficulties, and were sending empty coasters through. We enjoyed this ride the second time almost as much as the first. Then, off to grab FPs for Indiana Jones before checking in at 11:30 for an early lunch at the 50’s Primetime CafE

I had warned Buzz before hand what this place would be like, so he was on his very best manners (although he usually has good manners). We were seated in Mom Sue’s section and introduced to the other “kidsE Buzz ordered the PotPie and Cheese Fries and I ordered the PotPie and Onion Rings. Mom only yelled us at for not saying Please. She seemed pretty good at judging how far she could go with some people without embarrassing them. She also gave us a homework problem to work on while we waited. Ours was, name the 8 US Presidents who have a one syllable last name. (We got 7 of the 8). While the appetizers were good, we both didn’t like the PotPie. It definitely isn’t like the PotPie we have up here in Pennsylvania. While we enjoyed the atmosphere of the 50’s Primetime CafE we were disappointed with the food. Our meals, two drinks, and tip cost about $45.

After lunch, we had some time before our Indiana Jones FP, so we checked out Star Tours. The stand by time said 10 minutes, but we walked right onto the ride and were seated in a ship in about 2 minutes. This ride is much better than Body Wars, but with all the technology out there today, I can’t believe that it hasn’t been updated. We still had time after Star Tours, so we tried Muppetvision and walked into the preshow about 2 minutes before they started filling the theater. This was a favorite in 1996, but after seeing Honey (Epcot) and Bugs (AK), this was a little disappointing. However, in the Muppet shop adjacent to the theater, I was able to find some Rizzo merchandise. Rizzo is my favorite Muppet, and I have been searching for him for years, so this made me very happy.

We headed back to Indiana Jones and waited about 10 minutes for the show to start. I had seen this before, so it wasn’t as good this time through, but Buzz really enjoyed it. When the show was over, we rushed down to Beauty and the Beast and sat down about 5 minutes before the 2:30 show. They had a nice quartet singing acapella for the preshow, and they were pretty good and entertaining. I really enjoyed this show and liked the costumes, but Buzz was entering his melt down stage. He was hot and really sick of seeing shows by this point in the trip. I must admit, it was very stuffy in this tent, and the overhead fans did not seem to be helping.

In search of an attraction with air conditioning, we headed towards the Backlot and decided to do the Backstage Pass. I hadn’t done this before, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. We waited about 10 minutes before they let us into the air-conditioned haven. This tour was ok; I especially liked when we got to see them actually shooting scenes for the TV show Sheena. However, it was a little heavy on the 101 Dalmatians stuff. But, it was nice to be in the A/C for ½ an hour.

After the Backstage Pass, I convinced Buzz to try the Backlot Tour (no wait). I had done this before and knew all about Catastrophe Canyon, but I neglected to tell Buzz about it (remember, Buzz does not like getting wet on rides). I got a few death glares from Buzz until he realized that he wasn’t going to get wet (we were on the right side of the tram which is the dry side) and then he enjoyed this ride. I did want to try and catch the Hunchback Show since I like the movie, but Buzz would probably have gone ballistic if we did one more show (add this to the list of reasons to return to WDW, hehe).

We shopped for about ½ an hour and picked up FPs for Millionaire (75 min. standby) before heading to Sci-Fi Drive In Theater for our 5:15 PS. Just as we were checking in, a storm rolled through, and it rained pretty hard. Lots of people came in trying to get a table (car), but they didn’t have any openings until about 8:30. We were seated in about 5 minutes in a pink car. I had been warned from the DIS to stick to burgers and shakes at the Sci-Fi, however we didn’t see them anywhere on the menu. Do you just have to ask for them, or did they recently change the menu? Anyway, Buzz had Shrimp Penne Pasta and I had BBQ ribs, which were both ok. We also ordered a Vanilla shake and Strawberry shake, which were both excellent. While we also really liked the atmosphere and the shakes, the food wasn’t very good. Including tip, our bill came out to about $55.

It was still raining pretty good after dinner, so we put on the ponchos we had brought from home (another great DIS tip!) and headed for Millionaire. For some reason, we got lost and just made it in time for our FP. A word of advice, definitely use FP for this attraction. When we got in the theater, almost all of the seats were filled (except for 3 rows in the back). It was only at this point that they let in people from the standby line. I would guess that there were about 500 FP compared to 100 from the standby line. We both enjoyed this attraction, and Buzz was in fourth place after the one level. I decided to help him, since my keypad didn’t register on the one question and I was out of the running. However, of course I ended up getting a question wrong, and Buzz dropped out of the top ten. I didn’t live that down for a few weeks!

I also want to mention that through out the entire trip, we saw the most characters in MGM. We noticed Buzz, Woody, Mary Poppins, Donald, Brer Fox, Brer Bear, Rafiki, Pooh, Tigger, Mickey, Pinnochio, Jessie and Eeyore all in one day. We saw the least characters at the MK, which is very suprising.

I wanted to catch ToT one last time, so we headed there before we left the park. We got on this ride with no wait, and enjoyed once again. I noticed that this ride never seems to be busy later in the day, both times we were in MGM, we waited less than 10 minutes for it. Reluctantly, we left MGM around 7:30 to head back to the resort, waiting about 10 minutes for a bus. We did some packing and took one last swim in the pool before turning in for the night around 11. Tomorrow is our hit our favorites and say good bye day before heading back home. Boy am I going to miss this place!

Best and Worst of the Day

Woody
Best: Animation Tour and Beauty and the Beast
Worst: Rainstorm

Buzz
Best: Animation Tour
Worst: Didn’t like the food at both restaurants (but really liked the theming)

Sad but true. Usually though, at MK, MGM, and AK you can catch a lot of characters in the mid-late afternoon. between 4-6 pm. I'm surprised you saw Br'er Fox out, considering that Disney has pulled him from all of their parks.

Another full day at MGM!

I know what you mean about doing too many shows - my husband is the same way, I have to be sure to choose carefully which ones we see first before he says "NO MORE!" LOL!

Great report!
