buying where you stay?

I just cant buy into "Buy where you want to stay". Here is why im shocked that nobody has mentioned when the dvc contracts expire. BLT 2060 AKL 2057 others at 2042. What if you want to stay at a resort that expires in 2042. Wouldnt that be a deciding factor for you. It was for me. I bought AKL because not only does it last till 2057 but i recieved $$ off per point plus a promotion where i recieve 8 non expiring Annual Passes which if i plan it right i wont have to buy another AP for 16 years. That is a huge cost savings for me in the long run. So that is what made the decision easy for me. Maybe im just looking at it the wrong way.

It is a factor, as is cost. You have to look at all of the options and fit them together like a puzzle. However, if you want to stay almost all of the time at a 2042 resort, you must decide what is the risk you won't be able to do that if you own something else. Also there is a cost to those other resorts that doesn't necessarily make them cheaper even if you have a longer time. SSR expires 2054 and can be bought for barely half of BLT, as can an extended OKW contract, they are the best values from a $$$ standpoint currently IMO. One thing you're forgetting is the time value of money and/or the extra costs paid with interest if financed.

I've never had an issue booking somewhere else, even under the 7 rule. I've gotten a same day Boardwalk room several times.

But of course too it depends on the time of year.

I think it also depends on what resort you're wanting to reserve. VWL, BCV and BLT are the smallest DVC resorts, so they're harder to get at 7 months than AKV, SSR and OKW, which are pretty huge.

I would venture to guess that most DVC Members don't intend to keep their contracts full term. Going to WDW every year for 10, 20, 30 years is a long time.

I would rather buy where we love to stay and not add the contract length into the equation. I have no idea what WDW will be like in 15 years or who will own it. For us it's more important to get the resort and room type that we love, than to save a little bit of money and take our chances.

It only takes a couple of disappointments to make you see that buying where you love to stay is prudent advice.

If you truly don't care where you stay, then buy the cheapest contract that you can find.

I feel the other way, that most intend to keep their contracts full terms but many end up selling later for various reasons when they didn't think they would have. I doubt a significant number buy expecting to sell later.

That surprises me. I would think that many would suffer from Disney burn out.

Most vacation proprieties are best used when they first open and we have learned that we should sell just before the developer leaves. Our experience has been that the developer puts in the extras to market the property and as soon as they leave the value tanks and the maintenance and extras disappear.

I'm not saying that Disney does this, but the landscaping at SSR and BLT sure is kept nice. :goodvibes

Landscaping at the other locations is nice as well.

Did I miss an AP incentive? I don't recall seeing one.

We purchased where we want to stay, and we are happy with doing so. Dvc also provides the flexibility of staying where we want, every other year.

Yes you must have missed the AP incentive. It was called a Castle to Castle promotion if you bought into AKL with 4 AP's for WDW and 4 AP's for DL, or you could have 8 from either. I chose 8 from WDW as i am on the east coast. That is what ultimately made my decision. I like AKL so it doesnt matter if i dont get something else at the 7 month window. I just like BWV sometimes as its close to everything.

As far as getting burned out ive been going to Myrtle Beach every year for 28 years and i still love it. Its vacation and what i enjoy and i feel the same way about disney. I love Disney because of the food, the characters the overall ambiance. I could go to Disney and just have a relaxing vacation and just go to the parks a little and spend most of the time at the spa and the pools. Disney will never get burnt out for me!!!

I think we're on different pages. My response was related to the intent at purchase, not where they end up, and I thought that was your initial point. I think there are many that buy intending to own long term and then later sell for any one of a number of reasons. Unfortunately many of those could have saved themselves money and heart break if they'd made better decisions up front but we all live and learn.

I would have to agree about burn out. As a potential DVC owner(i'm in ROFR right now), 30plus years was more than enough for me. If i want more, i can buy a new contract.

Also think that your point about developers leaving is usually the case. However, i don't see that at DVC because of the location of these resorts-on Disney property.

I do know that the cleaning and landscape schedules around the SSR Preview Center and BLT are different than the other resorts.

I was talking to a Mousekeeper at BLT who was cleaning the glass in the lobby. She is assigned to clean the lobby and the areas where the tours take place, all day long, everyday. I asked her how often does she make the rounds and she told me a couple of times each shift. She said that they don't like finger prints on the glass because of the tours.

:) I would bathe the giraffes at AKV if they would let me, and shine up their spots.
