Have started my first ever veggie garden indoors for over winter....... so far i have a few varieties of lettuce growing..... scallions.....celery......growing..... going to start or attempt to start some bell peppers from a yellow pepper i just used for dinner...... and some organic grape tomatoes from the superamarket............. but wanted to order some seeds whats a good website to order from.... i tried all the local stores around me ( lowes...homedepot etc ) and they only carry seeds in spring...........

What seeds are you looking for? Maybe we could trade if you have any you didnt plant.I am in fl and this is our growing season so there is plenty in the stores here. I also grow things from the seeds . I got a greenhouse from lowes. it is on wheels and has a plastic zip up cover. I think it was around $40. It helps them to spout faster. I have it on my patio. PM me if you want to trade

i actually dont have seeds :(........... didnt think of buying in the summer........this is my first attempt at growing indoors...... or heck even just plain growing vegetables............. but thanks.... maybe next year when i am an old hat at this... ;)

I usually buy seeds from the Burpee website. They always have some kind of buy $x.xx amount get $y.yy off deals. They have a huge selection and I've always had good success with their seeds and plants!

Go to youtube and look up self watering containers. Sure makes things easier.

I use Johnny's Seeds and Pine Tree Garden Seeds. Both are out of Maine. I have had great luck with both of them and look forward to their catalogs. Awesome companies! :thumbsup2

I like Johnny's selected seeds- just remember those peppers and anything like it will need to be pollinated- we had some success by hand , but not like the bees!

I use Baker Creek (rareseeds.com) almost exclusively now. They aren't cheap but their specialty is heirloom seeds so you can save seed from year to year.

that's great!! I've planted a indoor Winter Garden for several years now and love it. I love heirlooms because you can save the seeds, But you do have to consider that most heirlooms sometimes take up alot of space compared to seeds for plants that were created to take up less room. I have found that I have to plant some Hybrid seeds to get Cucumbers in the Winter, I use Spacemaster Cucumber Seeds from Burpee.com, they take 56 days to produce and their vines reach less than 24". What I do is plan ahead for next winter in the summertime, I buy extra packs of seeds and store in cool dry place, until starting my winter garden, which I start 4-6 weeks before the 1st frost so as my outdoor garden is dyeing, my indoor garden is starting to produce. As for as Scallions, I buy 2-3 bunches at the grocery store and use just the tops, plant the white bottoms with roots and clip just the green parts for eating, I have fresh green onions all winter. Also for your tomatoes, when they get flowers on them, you will have to either blow on them or thump them in order to get them to pollinate, it's very easy. I hand pollinate the cucumbers with an old small paint brushs but you could use use almost anything, Q-tip or small finger. I have Tomatoes (these take sometime 3 or more months to produce, so I start these in July or early August) and get tomatoes in Early Oct., Cucumbers, 3 different lettus, Green onions, Basil (2 different kinds) I keep my Cool sensitive plants like Cucumber, Tomatoe, basil (and Bell peppers will need lots of heat) inside my terrarium, the onions, lettus can stay at cooler room temp.I also use old heating pads to get seeds to sprout faster, helps warm up the soil. If you would like some of the Cucumber Seeds, let me know, I would be happy to ship some to you in a letter sized envelope. I will be getting a new pack this coming summer at Walmart for $1.00 but if you purchase now on Burpee.com it cost $4.95 plus shipping. I wish you success and happy winter gardening, it's addictive!!

omgoodness thanks for all this info.... did not know u had to hand pollinate the flowers on the veggies...... I already have scallions regrowing and some green and red leaf lettuce and celery from the farm stand...... never knew u could do that.. started those a few weeks ago............ thinking of growing some garlic bulbs cause i love garlic........... and i started thom thumb lettuce from seed a month ago and its amazing how much lettuce i have....... I will hold off on the cucumber right now cause i have to figure out how much space i have indoors........... was looking at the idea of plantng in a hanging shoe rack....... maybe some strawberries ??? i dont know this is all new to me and it is pretty exciting.............

I Use hanging baskets, but I'm sure that an old shoe hanging rack will work well. There are only certain veggies that need hand pollenating (such as touching several of the flowers) the tomatoes pollentate from wind or viabration. Remember this coming springtime to stock up on seeds and store in cool dry place until next fall. I'm also not a winter person and love gardening, it's a very short growing season where I live, so to have something green to look at and eat, helps me to endure. Let me know how your garden turns out. I am going to try and plant "Minnesota Midget" melons soon and hopefully these will produce, they are a Short season, compact plant and make small cantalope type melons that are very sweet.
