Buying resale now or waiting?

We are looking into adding on points with resale in the next month.
Is everyone else still moving forward with buying resale or waiting to see what happens with any changes?

I'm planning on buying my first contract resale as soon as I see one that fits what I'm looking for. I have read different rumors on here about restrictions but I am going to take the risk.

To be honest I probably couldn't afford to buy direct from Disney so I really have no other option if I want to buy into DVC. I am just going to buy at a home resort I wouldn't mind staying in and hope for the best! :goodvibes

This is like buying electronics or a car. The price will go down/terms change, etc. The question is what do you want or need right now. Remember, Disney can change the terms to the contract for ANYONE, resale or not. They just have to let you stay at your home resort. My crystal ball is not cut out to know Disney's future, but if yours is, then we should take a trip to Vegas together! :)

Predicting the future is pretty hard. If you are ready to add on, there's no reason not to shop around.

I think I will wait before adding on.

I bought on direct at GCV with a certain number of points to use every year, thinking DVC has not adjusted points for years.

Now DVC has adjusted points twice! Now I have to bank every year to get the time I want.

Currently, I just do not trust in what DVC is doing or the direction they are going in.

Buy now....you never know what they're going to change

No one knows what the future holds...but...here are a few of the latest rumors Im hearing on other Disney forums.

Latest Disney RUMORS...
Disney is looking to make changes of direct buyers vs. resale buyers. There are a number of proposals that are actively being studied... It would be difficult to cover all of the them, so I am going to cover the one that seems to give DVC the biggest bang for the buck... ie, costs them the least but gives them the biggest "differentiator" of new vs resale.. that is --- messing with the booking windows.

The variations at the top of the list.

1) A preference system given to individuals with more points.. consisting of a longer booking window depending on number of points. The only points that would be eligible are the ones purchased directly from Disney or "grandfathered" in
2) Longer booking windows on the home resort that is bought directly from DVC
3) Longer booking windows in the non-home resorts when points are bought directly.
4) "Locking" the older resorts so that they cannot book in the "new" resorts at all or only with the last 60 days. ie.. people who bought resale in OKW could not book at BLT, SSR-THV, AKV and Aulani and all future resorts except in the last 60 days.

I haven't been on the boards in a looooong time -so this is the first time I am
reading anything like this -i think it was maybe last fall when i remember some talk about something for people with over 1000 points or something like that
Did anything come of any of that ??
A special club or booking window ect....?

At the DVC Annual Meeting a month ago, DVC President Jim Lewis alluded to a "tiered loyalty program" that would be announced. No information about the program was released then or since by DVC.

I think waiting to purchase - either by resale or direct - until you know what any program might entail is not worthwhile and waiting based on unsubstantiated internet rumors and speculation is absolutely foolish.

As for the point chart reallocations the past two years, DVC went from 1991 thru 1995 with no changes in the point charts and then went from 1996 thru 2010 without changes. It appears that the changes they needed to make (they do have the responsibility to make such changes to maintain appropriate occupancy levels) could not be made in one change due to contractual limitations in how much change may be made in any one year - so they spread them out over two years. The 2012 charts were announced a couple of months ago and show no further changes. While I believe it to be important that all DVC Medmbers be aware that the point charts could be changed (some nights go up a few points and others go down a few points), at this point I don't anticipate further changes for at least a few years until there is evidence of the effect of the changes made in 2010/2011.

As for allowing internet rumor or concern over what possible changes could be made in the future to affect a purchase decision IMO there is no time like the present to purchase.

Stay tuned!

It is "expected" that any change for direct vs resale would at least grandfather in previous resale purchases. Another reason not to wait. The one thing that, to me, can be learned from 2-4 on that listing above is to make sure you have a home location that you really like, so that if you had to stay there every time you wouldn't mind.

I agree with regard to RESALE. In fact, if you believe existing resale contracts would be "grandfathered in" as many believe, you might be better off buying resale now, rather than waiting.

I think an argument could be made to wait and see before buying DIRECT from DVC. Will DVC actually offer an attractive "loyalty program" that would outweigh paying twice as much to buy direct?

That would have to be one HECKUVA loyalty program IMHO!

We signed for a contract yesterday, now waiting to see if it all goes through smoothly. :goodvibes

I would think any changes to the program would be a "from this point forward" type thing that would apply to purchases after the proposed change...if you wait to purchase, you may be subject to new restrictions.

However, don't jump in and buy based on speculation...if you are financially able and know DVC is a good fit for your family, go for it!

I would think this is correct and that Disney would not make changes that would effect current contracts.

Also I think they would look at additional benefits to encourage direct purchases vice resale as well benefits that encourage longer stays (more points).
