Buying Resale - Conflicting Info?

I've heard and read two different things about a resale DVC and I wanted some clarification.

Can you switch resorts if you buy a resale (ex. buy into SSR, take a stay in AKL)?

Sorry if it's been asked a thousand times, but I literally go to one site and it says you can and the other says you can't.

Thanks! :)

Yes you can. You can book your home resort 11 months out. Any other resort 7 months out.

Where does it say you can't do this? Maybe it's actually talking about something else?

That's what I like to hear. :)

I know you can't do the collections and whatnot, but who needs concierge? ;)

"subject to availability." that can be an important phrase.

if you expect to get a value room or club level room at AKV at 7 months out, you are likely to be disappointed.

if you want a savanna view at kidani village, things will generally work out, as AKV is a larger resort. (though not as huge as SSR.)

i wouldn't buy SSR unless i was happy staying at a larger resort (SSR/OKW/AKV) where there is typically some availability at 7 months out. you might be lucky and be able to find whatever you want at 7 months out, but it can sometimes be very frustrating and limiting at that point...

edited to add: there may also be some confusion on the details. if you own a resale anywhere, you cannot stay in the hotel side of the AKL. you can only use DVC pts to stay in DVC rooms.

We're not too picky on where we stay, but after 10 years, we may want to stay somewhere else. We're also super flexible on our times we can go... and I flat out refuse to go in July ever again. ;)

Disney can change the rules and they do. What we are allowed today my change tomorrow.

We never expected them to restrict resale buyers or deliberately delay their account set up but they do.

But they'll never flat out restrict you from going... I hope.

I'm asking this for the other half. I could sleep on a log, as long as I'm in Disney!

Just an FYI, on this forum we use AKL (Animal Kingdom Lodge) when referring to the hotel, AKV (Animal Kingdom Villas) when referring to the DVC resort. As chalee said, you cannot use points (resale or direct) to stay at AKL (the hotel) but you can use points to stay at AKV (the DVC resort) no matter whether your contract was purchased on the resale market or directly from Disney.

Sometimes you see VAKL - Villas at Animal Kingdom Lodge. Its the V that tells you "hey, we are talking about the DVC part of the property."

Sorry, I thought it was assumed, but you know what that means...
We need to distinguish AKL and AKV because "Can I use points to stay at AKL" (meaning the hotel) is a legitimate question but different from "Can I use SSR points to stay at AKV".

It used to be possible to book the AKL hotel on points until Disney added a DVC resort there. Once they add a DVC resort at a hotel location, they usually remove the option to book that hotel with points. There is an exception at one or more of the Disneyland hotels but I can't remember the details.

You can use direct bought points for stays at other WDW resorts (non-DVC like the Poly) but you cannot use points bought via resale after March 2012 to do so. Same goes for Disney Cruise Line. Those things take a lot of points though and most DVC'ers just use their points for DVC resorts (trading into RCI maybe too, though I haven't had good luck with that either).

I believe the rule change was in March 2011.

We're really not that picky about where we stay (ALL of the DVCs are my favorite Resorts...) but I think the fact you can stay at other resorts may have just sealed in us getting a DVC!

yeah, my post above could stand to be edited as it's more complicated than that, but i was just trying to work out where the issues began (that you could trade into some disney hotels with direct pts but not resales as opposed to being able to trade into different DVC resorts at 7 months out).

if you are happy staying at SSR at least some of the time, i think SSR is a great deal. it's fun to try other DVC resorts. i have been "shut out" a couple of times at the 7 month window and wound up staying at my home resort OKW (which i enjoy, so no big deal)...but, depending on the time of the year and the resort you are trying to get into, it definitely can be an option...

gets even more confusing when there are villas on the hotel side of AKL in Jambo.

There was some speculation on this board and others that DVC might restrict resale buyers to their home resort or to a later time period than retail buyers say 4 months out instead of 7. As I understand the process and read the documents, this is not legally possible within the current DVC resorts. They could carve out new resorts or undeclared/unsold portions even of newer resorts to be a separate system, essentially a new timeshare not directly related to DVC. They could also instituted a VIP system.
